hardwood dash trim and a/c ?'s
Yahoo Message Number: 24014
What is the hardwood dash trim?  Does it look nice?  Does it spice up the dashboard that much?   Does the dash look very plain without it?  Also, we live in Bakersfield where it's terribly hot.  Would the motor-driven air conditioner cool us enough or would we have to run the generator and roof air conditioner as well?  Is there such a thing as a partition, zippered fabric or otherwise, that might fit behind the driver and passenger seats that would keep cool air in the cab?

P.S.    Thanks for all the responses re: mb vs. rb.  It's been very imformative.

You can see one installed at the factory. I would call it a blond wood color.  It covers areas of the dash. Of course, not the area of the passenger air bag. I liked it an ordered it. I think it was $190, but could be wrong.  You might be able to order it as an after market item from a catalog or shop for less.  I do not know if it would be difficult to install.

In the old days ('50 and '60s), the interior of a car (and some trucks) was color co-ordinated with the exterior.  Nowdays it's all gray, gray, gray and sometimes tan (for the most part).  I don't like it (my $ .02)

That's putting it mildly.

have to run the generator and roof air conditioner as well? Not having LD experience, but extrapolating from our camper van, I would say that while driving, the dash air which can be directed to blow right on you will keep the driver and one passenger comfortable.
As the LD video points out, the cabover shades the windshield for high sun angles.

I would say that on very hot days that a third person passenger riding in the area behind the cab would probably want the roof air and generator running, but that it is not needed for driver and front passenger only.
In prior posts, there has been discussion as to how to keep rear area cool with out running roof air (reflective material on sunny side windows & 12 v fan to direct dash air rearward.)

I do not know of this as a special product with zipper.  LD manual says hang a heavy blanket when camped to keep living area cool (or warm) from less well insulated cab. LD sells a blanket which be used.
I do not recall any mention of anyone needing it in place while driving.

Victorville isn't much cooler than Bakersfield. Unless you have a place to store the LD in a shaded area, I wouldn't get the wood dash trim, just because the sun could be too severe for it.  We have the LD dash cover made of carpet, plus the wrap around outside window cover.

"What is the hardwood dash trim?  Does it look nice?  Does it spice up the dashboard that much?   Does the dash look very plain without it?"
As previously posted the hardwood dash gives the front portion of the dash the nicer appeal of a wood dash. If they had that option when I bought my 2001 I would have gotten it. They didn't and I've looked into aftermarket wood dash kits. The aftermarket kits I've found are all more expensive than what LD charges but the type of wood or often fake wood used and the amount of covered area can differ greatly and so can the price. The E-series dash is VERY plain without the wood dash kit! It was an item I put on the questionnaire LD sends to new owners that they should offer as an option and I see they have along with other things I mentioned I would like them to offer.

"Also, we live in Bakersfield where it's terribly hot.  Would the motor-driven air conditioner cool us enough or would we have to run the generator and roof air conditioner as well?"
The dash air can cool the entire coach of some models IF the interior is either pre-cooled or not extremely hot to start with. Using a clip- on 12vDC fan like the ones sold at Wal*Mart for under $10 will help blow the cold dash air back without freezing the front passengers. If the interior is hot to start with the dash air is sufficient to cool and keep the front cool but the rear won't get very cool without some help.

We travel with the sunny side shades down when the sun is coming in through them and that's enough to keep it cool with a 12vDC fan or two blowing. At times we use 2 fans, one in front blowing back the other in back blow forward and that keeps it nice and cool and can even cool the rear off if the interior hasn't been allowed to get hot. If it gets hot inside I run the generator to power the roof A/C only until it gets cool and then just use the dash A/C and fans. I've even used the Fantastic fan to exhaust the hot air and just the dash A/C and fans if the interior is already warm but not extremely hot.
Once it starts cooling off in back we shut the Fantastic fan off and close it. It really depends on how hot it is and how hot the interior has gotten. Running the generator to power the roof A/C and not the dash A/C in my experience uses more fuel than just running the dash A/C.

run the generator and roof air conditioner as well?
Well, I live in Dallas, Texas, and it gets pretty warm around here.  I have traveled quite a bit in the local climate.  It has been my observation that the cab A/C does an excellent job of cooling the front half of my 23.5' LD.
In gact, it does a significantly better job than the roof A/C.  (Although I find the roof A/C does a fairly good job if the door is not opened a lot.) We have a water-proof table cloth that we leave under the edge of the cabover bed so we can drop it over the cab at night in extreme temperatures.
We've never needed it while driving (with the cab air on).  When we are on the road, we flip it over the bed as added protection from whatever might make its way into the coach.

David, the cab air conditioning works really well...we have no trouble keeping cool in the front seats.  I doubt that it would cool all the way to the back lounge area in our Mid-Bath though.
We have the dash trim and I think it looks great, otherwise it seems that the entire dash is just a greyish color, the wood grain makes it look really good.  We use a comforter dropped down behind the front seats at night in cold weather to keep from loosing heat through the cab area but haven't seen a need to do so in the summer time yet...certainly not while driving the cab air is more than enough to keep the cab area really cold.
