We are impressed with Lazy Daze, but are undecided whether to buy the 26' mid-bath or 26' rear bath.  Please respond with the pros and cons of each.

David and Laurie,
My wife and I take delivery of a rear bath at the end of July. I will simply give you the pros of that model as I see them based on our intended use, which is full-timing.  We chose the rear bath because of the open floor plan (one large room rather than two smaller ones) and the large bathroom which includes the wardrobe and ample dressing space. We're getting the twin sofa option so we'll have a queen bed over the cab, a sofa each in the "living room" and a dinette. The twin sofa option also results in extra outside storage.
There will be just the two of us 99% of the time. Very few overnight guests. So the issue of those in the overhead bed having to crawl over or by those in beds below to reach the bath in the middle of the night, or waking up in the same room as our guests, was not an issue for us.
Other things I like: ready access to everything from everywhere, easy access to the car stereo from the living room, bath at the rear of the coach, the ability to have a group easily mill about from dinette to sofas to outside when socializing.
There's no such thing as a perfert plan though. You need to think carefully about how you will use the coach. And then ask the folks at LD what works best for that intended use. For instance, do you travel full-time or part-time, with kids, guests, have similar or different sleeping habits, like to be alone or together, plan to sleep in the overhead or below and, if the latter, in twin, double or king configuration, preferences while driving, etc. etc.?

We chose the 26.5 RB (1999). Mostly because of the open feel. We have the double sofa, which we use for our king sized bed, and we really like it. (especially the added large compartment outside) My wife is not a morning person, and I am, so not having a divided space is a little drawback, but it works out ok. I also like the view out the rear window, via the mirror, while driving. I believe some of the models, do not have this view (?).
The large dressing are available when the wardrobe door is fully open, is real nice.
We generally only travel with the two of us, but have had an extra person a couple of times, and it worked out fine.
You need to weigh your life style against the different models and see what fits. We have put 42,000 miles on it in three years, and have enjoyed them all.

D & L: When I went to the factory a couple of months ago, I was already ready to write the check for a mid-bath. I just love those three huge windows in the back. Well, it took good ole Ed to change my mind, and he did.
While seated in a MB, I told him what I wanted, he said in his usual warm and fuzzy style, "no you don't." Why not, sez I?
He pointed out that the MB was really perfect for families or people who wanted to split sleeping spaces for any reason. The MB does that.

Then he took me over to the RB. We sat down, and he said, "see? You have all these same huge windows here, plus you can still see out the back." "You're traveling alone and you like to entertain. The RB is made for that. Everyone can sit up here together". Well, of course, he was right. So I just changed my mind.

For those of you who think it's yukky to have the refrig. in the bathroom/dressing area when the dressing room door is closed, we checked it out during the Seattle/Puget Sound/Olympic Mountains Sunset GTG the other day. We had 2 new 26' RB's there, and you can't open the refrig door when that dressing room door's closed - just in case that makes any difference to anyone.

Just my opinion - your mileage may vary.

Sarah, anxiously awaiting her new 26' RB in November

David and Laurie,

I have to add my humble opinion here. We were looking for a used mid-bath, when a used rear kitchen just sort of fell in our laps. The price was right, the mileage was low, the options were what we would have ordered ... So we bought it! In retrospect, here are some of the advantages we feel are significant that we may not have thought of:

Ours has an entertainment center. Even though we gave up the overhead cab bed, we have a big TV, cd changer, etc.
The cabinets hold a lot of stuff (lightweight stuff - bedding, dirty clothes basket, life jackets, motorcycle and bicycle helmets, etc.

When we bought it in April we were determined to get rid of the two barrell chairs, and build a second sofa, which we did! We have a twelve year old son, whom we get along with great, and at night we love to just pull those couches together and watch TV and eat popcorn as one big group (dog included).

When I wake up early, I sneak into the rear kitchen, close the door and have my coffee while reading, or watching the birds or squirrells or whatever.

When we are on the road our son can sit near us on one of the sofas directly behind the driver's or passenger's seat. He is near us, can see out the front or side window, and does not have to sit way in the back for a sofa seat. He is motion sick prone so this is a huge advantage as the back of the rig has much more sway.

We are week-end travelers for the most part, a few longer trips are in the works for the summer, so the close sleeping quarters for two or three days at a time don't bother us at all.

Yes, the kitchen counter space is smaller, and if you were full-timing this may become an issue. For me it is a good excuse to barbeque, and otherwise keep mealtime simple!

To all the other RK owners out there, what have I missed?

I agree with you, we have a RK and it works well for us ...I put the clothes basket in the compartment below the refrigerator, it fits perfectly...we also have the entertainment center which gives us plenty of storage space...we travel with a dog with severe separation anxiety and since the couch where he spends most of his time is near us he's happy...we occasionally travel with one grandchild at a time and we pull the couches together and all sleep in the king- sized bed and have plenty of room...lack of kitchen counter space is not a problem for me, I don't fix elaborate meals when traveling...or at home either come to think of it!!!

It totally depends on how you want to use your LD and Sarah (and
Ed's) points are well taken.  Our first LD was an '89 26.5 RB...commonly called the 'party model'.  We loved it and used it for party-ing.  Then when we ordered our '01 26.5 MB, we did it for different reasons.  My wife can no longer climb the ladder to the cabover (arthritis), so now she sleeps in the bed in the back and I'm in the cabover.  When grandkids join us, it gives many options for sleeping and privacy.  Having had a RB and MB.....love 'em both!

David and Laurie,
Not intending to complicate matters, but consider the rear kitchen as well.
That panoramic view at the rear is enjoyed for breakfast, lunch and dinner, rather than in just the scant evening hours after dinner. (Rear kitchen vs. mid-bath)
Both the rear kitchen and mid-bath allow some "people-separation," if desired, whereas the greatest advantage of the rear bath is allowing entertainment of up to 12 people in the same area.
Note also that the rear kitchen has the greatest black tank capacity and greatest amount of wardrobe space, though the differences between models is not great.
Also, the passenger seat has the greatest rearward travel on the rear kitchen, especially helpful for the longer-legged (My spouse is 5'10").
This is our first camping vehicle of any sort. We sent a survey to our 6 experienced camping friends and most advised the mid-bath (none chose the rear kitchen).
We then spent 6 hours at Lazy Daze just moving between the models and talking to other customers in the showroom, the Newtons, and other employees. In the end, though all four (customer) couples had been leaning towards the mid-bath, three couples chose the rear kitchen (there was no collaboration of any kind, and we didn't find this out until we had signed the purchase order).
In the final analysis, it is a very personal decision, and one that you must make in the factory showroom after spending lots of time there.

Good luck!

Linda,

Points well taken.
In addition to the increased passenger seat space, larger sewage tank and wardrobe area previously articulated, I would take issue with those who indicate reduced overhead storage, and especially kitchen counter space.

Have yet to use all my overhead space, and we do five-week trips.
Regarding counter space, I am the cook, and do Chinese dishes, which require a lot of pre-cooking chopping of ingredients, as well as involved gourmet fish, vegetable, carbohydrate and salad meals. Using the sink insert cutting boards, the small counter, the dinette table, and sometimes the stove top, have not run into a "space" problem.
And the rear kitchen is a great conversation piece at campgrounds since there are so few made!

We think the RK is a wonderful model.  Like you, Linda, we were looking for an RB because of the "open" feeling, when we happened upon our 2000 RK...one year old and in wonderful condition (also with entertainment center).   So we went for it.  The kitchen in the RK has a wonderful "nesty" feeling, and gives you two complete living spaces.  And your guests walk into your "living room" instead of into your kitchen.  Sitting down to an indoor meal (when weather makes this necessary...we love to cook and eat outside) in a beautiful park, with all those windows...very cozy and yet very view oriented.  (Also makes a great bird blind!)  We have plenty of storage, even when we are on the road for
2-3 months at a time and have to carry clothing for all kinds of weather.  The
storage around the entertainment center is HUGE...as are the two closets.  As to kitchen counter space, well...the table doubles as a counter, as needed.
(Would imagine that you folks with RBs and MBs use the table this way, too.)

Good searching!
