How to locate Boondocking sites en route February 15, 2001, 03:04:26 pm Yahoo Message Number: 2045Hey folks, I'd appreciate knowing how some of you experienced boondockers find sites while you're traveling. Suppose you were departing Dallas for Vancouver, Canada. Do you use a special publication or map? Or do use the laptop and go to the Boondocking websites? Thanks, folks.Regards, Straf14
How to locate Boondocking sites en r Reply #1 – February 15, 2001, 03:19:55 pm Yahoo Message Number: 2046I have a GPS and use Delorme's Street Atlas and /or MS Streets&Trips 2001. First I look up all the FlyingJ travel centers on my route and mark them as they welcome RVs for a quick overnight and usually have very good fuel prices, dumps, propane and water. Then I mark all of the WalMarts and rest stops and use them cautiously if I feel they are secure enough. Then go to the various boondocker sites and mark them on my map. This usually gives me more than enough choices to overnight as needed until I get to my destination.

The publications you mentioned can be purchased, I presume, at a bookstore? And where do you get the locations of Walmarts and Flying Js? Thanks for your help.Regards, Straf14

How to locate Boondocking sites en r Reply #5 – February 15, 2001, 08:30:29 pm Yahoo Message Number: 2053If you buy a WalMart Rand McNally road atlas, it has the locations of all the WalMarts in the country, and is much cheaper than the regular edition. The Rand McNally maps show all state and federal campgrounds, and most of these are for boondocking. Buy a campground directory from any RV parts place or order on-line from www.campingworld.com. These list most every campground in the US and Canada, what hookups and features they have, their last-year rates, and numerical grades for the sites.Note that National Forests used to allow parking as long as you did not obstruct the road. Some still do - you can call park headquarters and ask. Be forewarned, some of these are located in paces where local toughs may want to harass you. ALWAYS boondock such that you can start the rig and barrel out of there in the forward direction, without backing. (Backing into the view side is one reason we love the rear lounge in the MB model) Even if someone tries to block you in, you probably have enough power to push them out of the way. This is not to scare you, just make you think a little when you boondock in isolated areas.Good luckGus Weber

It's really pretty easy in StreetAtlas or MS Streets&Trips and I do it on my desktop system when planning the trip. Then just transfer the file to my notebook for the trip and I can make quick decisions as to where I want to stop.
