Generator fuel

My neighbor RVer tells me that the solution to stale fuel in your genset is to install a shutoff valve in the gas line to the generator and to run the engine dry before storing.  He has even offered to give me the part number for the shutoff valve.  This can't be a new idea but there must be more to it than meets the eye.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Looking at my genset(2001 MB)the other day, I saw that there was a wire from it to a canister in the fuel line that could only be an electric fuel pump.  Since this wire already had a male-female break-away connector in the middle, I opened the connection and inserted a toggle switch into the line.  That is, the switch has wires with similar connectors and is inserted in series with fuel pump wire. If I don't like it I can just pull out my switch and reconnect the wire like new.

When the coach will be stored for a period, I run the gen set with the fuel pump off (switch off)until it empties the carb. bowl and quits. If I am traveling in it, I just leave the switch on.

Walter,
I'm not sure that is a good idea.  If a genset is anything like your typical carburated auto, there are gaskets and seals that need to stay wet.  Running it dry will dry out these items out, which will result in fuel leaks or vacuum leaks.  In the end, your genset will not run very good and will in all likihood, need a carb rebuild.

A better idea if you are not going to use it for more than 2 months is to add a fuel stabilizer.  It's cheap and easy.

I would love to help you, as I'm sure a few others.  But we need more info.  What model LD do you have, what genset are you getting? It sounds like the Camp Power model.  Do you know those are some of the noisiest gens on the market?

I've have researched putting a genset in my 91 MB, so I know a little about what is required to get the job done.  Others here have added gensets already.

As Victor pointed out, these are very noisy (which means you'll be very unpopular with your fellow campers). They are also pretty unsophisticated in terms of the power they produce.
Have you looked at the Honda gensets such as their EU1000i and EU2000i? These are pretty widely acknowledged to be the best small gensets on the market; they are exceptionally quiet, efficient, compact and produce very clean "computer-friendly" power thanks to some exclusive regulation and smoothing technology Honda uses.
They also have an enviable reputation for reliability (like most things Honda).
Prices run from about $650 for the 1,000W model to about $975 for the 2,000W model. Many people on this list can testify firsthand to how good the Honda gensets are. I don't own one myself...but if and when I buy, this is clearly the top choice .

I have the small Honda Andy's talking about, and he's right, it's very very quiet. Actually, I never use it except to run it every month, so am going to sell it.

Wish you were close by,

Sarah

Sarah,

Which model do you have and how much you asking? I maybe interested if you are willing to ship or swing by Colorado. :-)

Yup! Great product. Runs the microwave and everything else...except the a/c. Neighboring campers always comment on how quiet it is.

We got our EU2001i at www. Mayberrys.com/camping ($859 w/free shipping). Good people to do business with.

How do you transport it?  We have been considering a generator, but the $3000 + to install one didn't seem worth it.

Let me check on e-bay Victor - I'd sell it to you for whatever they seem to be going for. Does that sound reasonable? More later -

It only weights 54 (56?) pounds. We carry it in the toad.

Sarah,

Fair enough.  Although, I' have not seen used Honda's listed there before, only new and they are the same prices you find at Mayberry's.  Just let me know what you find.  I don't think I'm in any rush, so ...

I think you would need at least a 3000 watt gen or larger to run your a/c plus a few lights, TV, etc. That's the size that I have and it runs everything just fine. The exception might be trying to run your a/c and a microwave at the same time. Another possible exception would be a/c and a hair-dryer at the same time. Any 4000 watt gen should run any combination of these together without problem.
If your coach has no gen compartment, it might be possible to create one from an outside storage compartment, depending on how your unit is arranged. This idea is relatively complicated/expensive if you hire a shop to do it. Some mount portable gens on the rear bumper using a hitch mounted cargo carrier. If you don't need to run the gen while driving, you could do what we do and carry it inside the motorhome. Ours fits in the bathroom floor, still allowing access to toilet/shower (we have an 84 front lounge).

Buy the quietest gen that you can afford. Rv'ers are VERY picky about noisy generators, you will make enemies that way if you're not careful. There are tons of threads on other RV forums about generators, brands, noise, cost, etc. The best choices for portables seem to be Honda and Yamaha. I have a Honda clone called ELM 3000 that I am happy with. It is quiet, but I am still careful about where/when I use it. We do alot of boondocking so we seldom camp near others. I never run it in a campground or any place that has hookups. Honda/Yamaha portables in the size that you need will involve spending between 1000-2000 dollars. An Onan or similar built- in rv genset will cost more, plus the cost of creating/wiring a gen compartment. "Contractor style" portable gens like Coleman, Craftsman, etc. are very loud and will be criticized by many rv'ers.
If that's all that the budget allows, use alot of discretion with where and when you use it.

On labor day week-end,I noticed that when I ran my generator, it was running fine, but after my wife turned on the microwave, the generator start surging, like it was almost going to shut off, and then go back to normal, when the microwave was off, and no load the generator was fine. does anyone have any ideas as to what might cause this, and how I can remedy it?

Sounds like a fuel problem.  First question, how much does your generator get exercised (particularly under load)?  I have a Honda EU3000is at home that sat unused far too much.  It would start and idle just fine, but stumbled badly under load.  It looks like the carburator had gummed up, even though I had stabilizer in the gas.
Ran a bunch of carb cleaner in the gas and I able to eventually get it back to running normally under load.  Most of the time that our LD's generator gets run is just to exercise the generator (usually running the A/C as well).

I have the RL model and the outside storage area behind the coach door is where it is supposed to go.
