Geocaching success!

Sarah,

I got an eTrex Vista a few days ago and sort of figured out how to use it. Thanks for the tip! I love it.

We went to Big Bear Friday and found one geocach. We stayed overnight in the woods and found another geocach on the other side of town early this morning. Now I have to go on the geocach website and post what we did.

For all you LD'ers out there this would be a great activity for you and your kids or grandkids. We are trying to figure out where to hide a geocach of our own now!

In case some of you out there don't know what a geocach is, go to geocaching dot com, where you can find out all about it.

Happy camping! Chris

PS from Chris's mom (straight A's and E's for an entire school year warrants a cool sixth grade graduation gift, hence the eTrex Vista - show this to your kids for a motivational kick start!)

Hey Chris - you probably had that thing figured out in nothing flat. I had to pour over the manual, then one of the bright guys on this list, Andy Baird, directed me to a video tape that Garmin puts out. That was really helpful. The other thing that helped me was going hiking with another person who had the same GPS and we did the settings together.
I found a HUGE geocache last week. I was driving up from California to Portland, Oregon to stop over with a couple of Lazy Daze friends - Linley and Celia Gumm. They gave me written directions, but also included the coordinates of their home. I didn't print off the directions - rather I put the coordinates in the GPS and when I got about 25 miles south of Portland, I set it to "Go-To" and off I went.
Well, as you can imagine, I took several un-necessary turns and had to do some back-tracking, but WALLAH!!! I found them. What a hoot!!!
Congratulations on your excellent grades! I look forward to seeing you again when I come through Victorville. We'll do some geocaching together.

Linda:  Where in the woods? At a campground? Friend's house? Just off in the woods someplace? We are wanting to take off for Big Bear and sure would like to know.

Tks...Anne

Anne,

Go to the web site: geocaching dot com. You can search for geocaches worldwide. We used the zip code for Big Bear (92315) which gave us several caches in and around Big Bear.
We printed out details for five of them. Couldn't find one, and didn't have time for two others. Our two successes were Ursus Petrus, (on the Woodland trail near the ranger station close to the visitor information center) and 100 Aker Wood (directions to this one on the info page). Neither one had awesome contents, but it was fun hunting! Chris ended up with a small can of play dough and a length of speaker wire. Go figure what a twelve year old will choose!
If you want more info feel free to email me: linlinvv at aol dot com.

Glad our LD has a good heater. It was 40 degrees when we got up in the morning!

Anne,

Just read back through your message and realized you may have been asking about where we camped! We like to go up the Fawnskin side on 3N14 (perhaps called Rim of the World Drive??) Off 3N14 are side roads 3N08 and 3N12 to name a few that have nice spots to pull over and dry camp. Some are sort of tight, but we seem to make it through! We have boondocked up there for years in our slide-in camper, and now finally in the LD.

You need an Adventure Pass to dry camp anywhere or park just aobut anywhere either for that matter. You probably know this if you are from Cal. Big Bear Discovery Center on the north side of the lake has lots of info.

Serrano camp, which has some hook-ups, dump station, etc. is right on the lake (north side) - by reservation only. We have never stayed there, but probably will in the future. There is a nice bike trail leading through that area too. I believe reservations have to be made at least two or three days in advance. The National Recreation Reservations Number is 877-444-6777 or
www. ReserveUSA.com.

Hope that answers some of your questions. When are you going? From where?

Linda
