Hi all, I am Linda's son Chris. I checked out the web site Sarah told us about called geocaching.com. I can't wait to try to find a treasure. This looks like so much fun. Now I have to save my $$ up for a hand held GPS device. Guess I will be mowing lots of lawns this summer!

Sarah, I loved meeting you and Mz. Daizy! Did you find the Mac store? Have a safe trip to cooler spots.

Chris

Hey Chris I¹m not surprised that you¹d want a hand held GPS. I forgot to show you mine before you guys left. Take a look at the Garmin web site. The least expensive one is called the eTrex it¹s the one I have. Cute little yellow thing. I think you¹d like that one.

Here¹s a site for comparisons.
http://www.offroute.com/comparisons/gps-compare.html
Fry¹s Electronic store has a great selection and I¹m sure you and your dad love going there anyway!!
Well, I didn¹t get to a really cool spot yet today I drove much further than I usually do got to Carson City, NV. Will head over to the SF Bay area tomorrow I think they have their natural airconditioning working well right now.
I didn¹t find the Mac place. I drove forever, and looked as carefully as I could, but just couldn¹t find it. So I called a Mac guy in Marin County that another Lazy Daze person (Jonna) referred me to I have an appointment set up for a couple of days from now to get the files transferred and a couple of other things.
Chris if you ever decide that you want to run away from home, just let me know. I¹d love to have you for a traveling buddy!!
Take care, and have a ball this summer before and after mowing lawns, of course.

Virtual hugs, Sarah  ~^_^~Now I have to save my $$ up for a hand held GPS device.

For what it's worth, I saw the Garmin eTex--the smallest and most popular of the handheld GPS receivers--on sale at Target yesterday for $88, which is way below the normal $115-$125 selling price. The display said "Lowest price this season," and I can well believe it!
As Sarah points out, this unit is ideal for geocaching and general hiking/biking kinds of uses.
It's not ideal for vehicular use, however, because it can't be connected to an external antenna. Also, while it can be connected to either a computer or a 12V DC cord, you can't hook it up to both at the same time as far as I know.
It's a great second GPS, though. In my case, it was a great first GPS--I bought it to learn the technology with, because it was simple and inexpensive, then went on to get a more sophisticated unit (Garmin 12XL) that I use with my navicomputer.

Tom and Stephanie Gonser's site, RVers Online --
www.rversonline.org -- has a good "intro to geocaching" for those interested; http://www.rversonline.org/ArtGeocaching.html

The Gonsers will be doing a session on this popular "sport" at the Life on Wheels conference in July -- www.lifeonwheels.com for all the information on this great learning opportunity for RVers-- complete with a "find the cache" hunt for course attendees.

For anyone interested in geocaching, just "google" the word and *many* references will come up.  The main site is
www.geocaching.com ; this informative site lists thousands of caches all over the world and also offers a lot of information on the sport in general. Tom And Stephanie Gonser, owners of the RVers Online web site, are avid geocachers, and have done presentations at LOW and have included some "pieces" on the sport on their web site -- one article is at: http://www.rversonline.org/ArtGeocaching.html

But.... again.... we are talking about a cache group of JUST this LD group.  I think most of us are well aware of the whole geocaching thing, it certainly hasn't been kept a secret.  But a LD cache group would (somewhat) go toward the desire many of us have to meet each other.  I'm not proposing puting anything in the casche except slips of paper that sortta say "I was here."
If I find a site I really like I establish a cache.  I put a bizillion slips of paper into it w/ my name, my rigs name & floor plan.  & maybe the location, so the slips from one of my caches will be different from slips from other caches.  Plus any message I want to put in.  I then post the clues in a folder we put on our group site.  Anyone who wants to participate goes to the site, finds the cache & gets one of my slips.
This gives us a way to recomend site to others & gives me a reason to go to places that others have recomended.  It gives me a goal to reach.
Then, whoever collects the most slips is the current winner.

I did my first geocache a couple months ago..what a blast!  It really is a fun thing for people that like to hike.  It's like hiking for treasure....x marks the spot! I left a nice bracelet that I had quit wearing in the cache and took a cool magnet.

Sue,

Do you have a hand held GPS (is that what it is called?) What kind do you have if you have one? Do you like it?

Linda (and others)...I have two hand held GPS units.  A Garmin III+ which I love, and a new Etrex that I got for Christmas.  I just fired up the Etrex on my recent trip for the first time....where's the map??? And I don't see anyway to download the map?  So I'm a little confused as to the desirability of the etrex.  It looks to me the only value of the etrex is for plotting a course and reversing your way out, but not relative to a visual map.  Tell me where I'm wrong.  So, anyway, if I'm not wrong, I'll probably put my once-used etrex up on ebay and stick with the III+ as my unit.  The etrex is really nice and small, and I love that the antenna is internal.

Sue,

Gee, A couple of the eTrex's were just starting to look appealing on their web site... Would you mind telling me which model you have that you are not thrilled with? I was looking at a couple of the higner-end units. My son thinks he has to mow lawns til he dies, but I have an idea he will be geting one for 6th grade graduation next week.

Just a quick brag here, then I promise to stay more on topic in the future. Today, at my son's year end school awards ceremony he received awards for: all A'sand E's, County Wide Honor Band award, First Chair Trumpet in Jazz Band and Concert Band for two years straight award, Writer's Acheivement award, Math Maniac award, and Honorary Citizenship award. It doesn't get any better than this - especially for a kid who goes out camping and quad riding, and is active with friends and at church too! In other words, he is not a nerd! He is going to have such a rich life if he can keep this up.

Anyway the point to all this rambling is he has earned his GPS unit! Now I need to figure out which one to buy - fast! Sure would appreciate any and all comments from others as well.

Linda

PS Andy, Thanks for the Target sale tip!

How wonderful to hear about your son's amazing marks, involvement, etc.
You are proud of him as you should be!!  Yes, he will have a rich life and I'll bet that he keeps up as he is doing.   Congratulations, Son!!! Blessings,  Bill and Melissa

Hi Linda...I have the plain yellow etrex.  It is useful if you have coordinates you want to go to, it will give you the bearing you need to get there.  I like having the mapping function though, it's so much more useful I think, plus does double duty for driving in the LD (not as great as some of the other discussions of late, but pretty good).  Plus you can order detailed mapping software to download into the higher end models...good for boondocking roads.  You might even be able to get topo maps into the upper end garmins, not sure.  I'm pretty in-experienced with the etrex though, I may have it all wrong.  But I took a look at the table Sarah posted this morning comparing hand held GPS's...looks like I'm right.  You are looking at a big difference in price though, sub-100.00 for the etrex, over $300 for the Garmin V probably.  My Garmin III+ was top of the line a few years ago and it's great.
Hey...way to go raising a wonderful son!!!  Keep up the good work!

Another thing to consider is the battery life of a GPS.  Not a critical thing, unless you're a long way from civilization and the thing runs out of juice!  I'm a firm believer of redundancy -- always carry a spare set of batteries AND 1) Know where you are on a real topo map 2) Have magnetic compass with you AND know how to use it and the map!  You'll never regret it --- speaking from experience!  People get lost in the damndest locations!

Garmin has a rebate on their Etrex and other GPS's. See
 http://www.garmin.com/products/etrex/

You can also compare the models as to function, battery life, etc.
They can be had much cheaper from some of the dealers on the net (as always -- Caveat Emptor).  I think I saw a Etrex Vista (high end) for $229 without the $50 rebate from Garmin.
Again, everyone, please consider the use of a topo map and magnetic compass as a backup!

Hope this helps, Dick                            mailto:

"Garmin has a rebate on their Etrex and other GPS's"
Unfortunately, it only applies to the more expensive eTrex models (Summit, Legend and Vista), so you can't get a $38 deal on the basic eTrex model I saw in Target! ;-) Still a very good deal at Target's $88 price, though.
The current Garmin rebates are documented in detail at  www.garmin.com/whatsNew/currentpromotions/>.
