I over-reacted last night, sorry.  I've got a dog down with major surgery and nerves were a bit raw.

This group is on a web site, and most individuals access it or can do so. The 'receive e-mail' option is available for those who want it, but you can't expect a large group of individuals to all change their habits for just a few. The issue complained about here occurs infrequently, and can easily happen by mistake even if unintended. It is not discourteous, nor in any way a violation of any policy of this group.
And, just for the record, extraneous text is transmitted very quickly even on slow connections. If everyone religiously edited every post, it would have no impact to speak of on download times. It may be tedious to read through, but this is not a connection issue - nor should it be an issue at all on this group.

Steve, Actually this has come up several times, although often we overlook the abuse of proper Internet and email etiquette. It is rather annoying to many people, me included, seeing the entire message being replied to left entirely intact over and over again. Especially a long one! If you look at the email etiquette sites they clearly state that one should only include the minimum relevant section from the email you are replying to! People that use email should be aware of proper email etiquette and use it, as they say, "ignorance is not an excuse"! Bad habits are also no excuse! These pages and many more have information on proper etiquette and it's importance.

I also think as a moderator you or one of the other moderators should put a message on the home page and the sign up page for this group about using proper etiquette. You should also include something to let new members know that they should NOT elect to get all the posts from this group as email due to the large number of posts daily to this group site unless they wish to. Many of the other group sites have these messages when you sign up to join them. This will eliminate the problem of people replying to messages here asking to be removed because the messages fill their mailbox! Suggest that they at the least use the digest option or view online and that they can change this option at any time and how that's done. I believe that is important so people understand how to properly reply and just how many messages this group generates. Having these messages displayed to those joining would greatly help in both areas.

I agree that text takes very little time to transmit, especially compared to graphics. However when the post being replied to is long and the reply is long the file size can easily become very large as well. Connection speed is not really the issue, though for some it's another reason to get upset. Memory when using Pocket Mail and other devices to access this group can be though. I also agree that people should religiously edit their posts, if they did this wouldn't ever come up! The real issue, from my perspective anyway, is that it is not proper etiquette. It is annoying to see the same post over and over when the reply typically concerns only a small part of the original message.

As this site becomes more popular, the number of postings keeps going up and used requires more and more of our time to monitor. Editing your posting is the simplest thing we can we to make this an easier task.
Some postings are so scrambled that is difficult to find the new message. So EDIT YOUR POSTINGS....Please.

Before sending your new posting, try using the 'Preview" button and see what it is going to look like. Do you like what you see?

Thanks

I repeat - this is a website, and not a list. The listserver is an option for the members' convenience only, and repeating all or part of the messages is not a violation of Yahoo's rules, nor should it be any kind of 'rule' for this group. Those who have objected have made their point clear, and at the expense of needlessly upsetting other members in some cases.

E-mail is older than the internet. Even after the inception of the internet I certainly remember painfully communicating at 300 Baud or less, with frequent dropouts, and no error correction on text. 'Etiquette' was a rudely enforced set of street rules that may have been necessary to get business done then, but these days I am content to see the battles waged only over in usenet newsgroups ( where 50MB binary files are bandied about), and am thankful we can avoid them here.
Again, too, I repeat that if you download your list once a week, you can expect to twiddle your thumbs awhile. The extra amount of time you will have to wait (or the extra amount of memory your Palmpilot will use) due to the few non-essential post repetitions that occur on THIS group is nil. This does not warrant netnanny procedures.

Steve,
I agree with you!  As someone who has followed this site for a longtime and who just last week ordered a 26.5 RK TS LD find the vast majority of posts useful and well worthwhile the time reading.  With such a large membership everyone should remember that "98% of life is just showing up!".  All hyper geeks....slow down...please.

"This does not warrant netnanny procedures."

Steve, Asking people to use common sense and courtesy to others and proper Internet etiquette is not net nanny procedures! I myself never view the messages on this site except when on the web. Normally I prefer to do it in expanded list mode. Even as such is is ridiculous that people don't learn to use proper formatting that is standard across the board on the Internet whether it is email, bullitin board, forum,  or a web page. We have a group that uses a hybrid of several of these and people receive the info from it in various forms as they are allowed. Many are using the email and replying without having the ability to "preview" the message as Larry suggested they do. I'm sure if many saw the post in that manner first they would edit it but they don't see it as it will appear. Even when replying online what people are using is Yahoo's email client software therefore proper email etiquette was intended even by Yahoo regardless of whether they police it!
Many of us who consistantly bring up the subject are only asking that people who use this, or any other group or service like it, learn the proper way to reply. The proper and universally accepted way that is intended on the Internet is to only include the portion of the message that your are responding to and not leave the entire message.
When this was a club prior to this becoming a group this was not even an issue but we all know that when Yahoo makes changes they don't always do it very well.
All it will take to get new members aware of this is to let them know from the start that this is the PREFERRED way to reply when they sign up to join. Make them aware from the beginning there are a lot of posts to this group and receiving them via individual email will result in many emails daily. They can avoid that if they elect to view online or in digest form to their mailbox as some do now. I don't think that is asking too much of people or of you or another moderator willing to add that message. Doing that will make a lot of people much happier with the group, both new and old members. I'm not asking you or anyone else to "police" the posts, only that you ask people to use it in the proper universally accepted manner!
