inverter question
Yahoo Message Number: 102443
I have a 1991 Lazy Daze.  We have never used an inverter and have no desire to install a large one.  Can we just plug a small inverter into the 12V outlet designed for the DC TV or will this damage?  The outlet specifically states it is ONLY for a DC TV but I don't understand why. Otherwise I suppose we have to plug into the cab 12V, which we don't want to do.
We run 2 - 6 Volt batteries in series. If we can plug an inverter in the TV socket, what size do you recommend.  Mostly we would use for a laptop and charging camera/cellphone batteries.

Thanks for any advice.

Liz, I would think that for the intended purpose of charging cell phones, and running lap tops you would be just fine plugging an inverter into the TV outlet.  If you plan on using higher power draw items you would want to consider hard wiring the inverter directly to your house batteries.  I tried running my 300 watt inverter off that plug in my 89 and it wouldn't handle the load of a 13" flat screen TV.  The wiring just isn't big enough to handle the amp pull.

We do exactly that (charge laptops and camera batteries).  We use a 140 watt inverter, and it works great for this purpose.

Generally, if the inverter comes with a 12V plug input that fits the socket in your LD, it will work.

I own a 1988 LD FL. I am considering the purchase of a 400 Watt(800 Watt peak power) plugin inverter to power my 9 inch Color TV/VCR that uses 60 Watts of power. My house battery is a single 12 volt 95 amp.
I also have a powewr booster on the antenna. Your thoughts, opinions.... Am Ion the right track here? The inverter is $50 and a modified sine wave.  Let me know  Thom
I carry an extra Optima RV/Marine deep cycle battery in my LD just for utilities i.e. recharging electronics (cell phone, ipods etc) and for running my LCD TV and DVD player. IF your TV draws too many amps, you need to hook the inverter directly to the battery. You can overload the cigg. plug.

Here's an excerpt from my Xantrex 400 inverter manual...

You must connect the XPower 400 Plus or XPower 700 Plus directly to a 12-volt battery if you are going to operate loads greater than 150 watts continuously. When the inverter is connected this way, you can operate loads of any size up to 320 watts continuously with a XPower 400 Plus and 560 watts continuously with a XPower 700 Plus.

Hope this helps.

Warning!  I melted the wiring in both sockets when I plugged protable inverters in my '94 MB.

Thom, I'm curious. The information in our "LD models through the years" document says that in 1984, the factory switched to using two 6V Trojan T105 "golf cart" batteries in all models, and my old 1985 Lazy Daze originally had two 6V Trojans. So it's surprising to hear that your 1988 LD, built four years after they made the switch, has only a single 12V house battery.
Can you tell whether that was the original setup, or whether perhaps a previous owner changed the battery configuration from two 6V to one 12V? Where is your 12V house battery located? Is there room there for a second battery?
If so, you'd gain tremendously by switching back to the twin-Trojan setup used in all LDs for the past twenty years. Your amp-hour capacity would jump from 95 to 225, more than doubling what you could do on battery power. ;-)

It appears that some people haven't had any problems doing just what you want to do; however, on our 2004 TK, the 12-volt outlet meant for the TV wasn't the same size as our other 12-volt outlet right beside it...the inverter plug was not physically able to go into the 12-volt TV outlet.  The two 12-volt outlets also had different size fuses...as I recall the 12-volt outlet that we used for everything other than the TV had a 20-amp fuse and the 12-volt TV outlet had a smaller fuse...don't remember now what size, maybe 10-amp or less?
However, if you are able to insert the inverter plug into the 12-volt outlet, then you shouldn't have a problem doing what you want to do.  I would think that a 75-watt, and no more than 150-watt inverter would be more than sufficient...you'll want to see what wattage your laptop is.
