Looking at buying a 1989 22' w/350 Chevy engine, rear lounge.  What should I be looking for on the inspection?  95,000 miles.  Any known problems?  Thanks.

Can't help you with the Chevy portion, but we bought an '89 Ford last year.  Guess you should check everything, including that all the appliances work, any roof/window leaks (not sure how you'd check this), etc.

The things we did not check and found after we had purchased: Toilet would not hold water Transmission fluid leak Cab A/C didn't work Heater core went out (not sure how you'd check this though) Small propane leak Were told tires were 2 years old.  Turns out they were 6 years old.

Things the seller told us about before we bought: leak around one or two of the windows step needed re-welding

Almost a year ago, my husband and I bought a 1987 22' w/ 350 Chevy engine, rear lounge. Be sure to get all fluids changed including oil! Had we done that and asked more mechanical type questions, it may have saved us from having to get a new engine installed half way home from CA to WA. Also our cab A/C doesn't work; no A/C in the coach. There had been a water leak through the front cab window. It was resealed and I sewed new curtains for that window and all the other curtains needed dry cleaning. We also had the roof completely resealed and front end aligned. Definitely budget for repairs and extras such as we may get new driver and passenger captains chairs this summer. Overall the coach was in great shape but needed a very thorough cleaning. The LD's really do hold up well! And our new Chevy engine runs great once it is warmed up. We're anxious for summer travel!

Bottom line was $4994.75 but the repairs involved much more than a new engine.  new water pump, fuel pump; alternator; almost everything under the hood is new. Engine alone was $1558 not including labor. The work was done at Bob's Auto and Towing in Corvallis, OR. overall pleased with their work except they said the A/C was fixed and it isn't. So we need to find a local repair shop to get a transmission cooler installed and to see what it would cost to fix the cab A/C. Fortunately here in the Northwest, A/C isn't needed very often.

Boy, Marti, you have really been through the mill! It is tough to figure out what kind of shape a used vehicle is in, I hope you have solved all the major problems with your investment. Good Luck!! Mari

I would start with the obvious, ask the seller if there are any problems that he/she may know of, leaks, accidents, things that aren't working.  When checking for leaks, look for discolored drapes, walls & roof.  Open all the cabinets and see if anything is dicolored there.  Push on the areas around the windows, vents, a/c or any other possible place a leak may occur.  If you feel any soft spots, you found a leaking area.

When I bought my used '91, I was most concerned with the mechanicals.  Will it run and can it stop.  So I had a mechanic do a compression check on the motor and do a complete brake inspection.
Most of the other things can be done yourself, such as what I described above.  I would also try to look over the plumbing to look for signs of leaks there.  Of course operate all the applinaces and ask them to cool the fridge for you before you arrive.

Good luck,

Victor
