==================== Mari Susan sez:  When I drove to Michigan and back alone, and I stopped at State Rest Areas, I would go outside and "talk" to someone in the coach ....I would say "Honey, will you look for the manual, etc.  Or some such blabber. No one REALLY knows if you are alone or not that way!! ====================
That remark certainly 'rings a bell'.   I live in a used-to-be quiet area with a new development going in across the street.  The builders have crews of out-of-country laborers working for them and 9 times out of 10 a half-dozen of them will be working on something right across from my driveway.  My house is about 60' in from the road.
Since I have a 'chain-gate' across my driveway, when I get out to undo and relock the chain gate, I know they are aware of me & watching...so, to stifle any ideas they might be getting by seeing me leaving,   just before I get back in the car after locking the gate I WAVE to the non-existent somebodies back at the house...and I holler..."I'll see you later!"
Between that ruse and the chain gate, I've never had my property bothered, however, my neighbors have both been broken into,  and neither of them have any kind of gate, chain or otherwise..     FRANCES

Talking about 'barking dogs'...
In my house I have a battery operated outside device that when someone passes it, it starts a loudspeaker inside) to loudly sound a wildly barking LARGE-sounding dog.  It sure sounds real, and cuts off in about 30-45 seconds.  Sounds like a Rottie or a Shepherd.
In my m.h., when I first bought it 9 years ago, I had a loudspeaker installed in the engine compartment, which was hooked up to the CB radio...  If I was being bothered in any way while camping, all I had to do was lift the microphone and start yelling FIRE!  FIRE!  HELP! (or, whatever).   The loud speaker was very loud and ear-splitting.
However, I never had to use it.  But, it made me feel safe.  And, I guess, that's about all these sirens and things do.
The small Beretta also makes me feel secure, and I've never used it either, excepting for target practice.  FRANCES
