I'm new to your group and new to RV'g.  I have really been learning so much from this group'thank you!
We're getting our 26'RB around the end of April'give or take a few weeks based on e-mails I've seen from several of you.  We intend to tow a vehicle from time to time.  I'm curious if the toad vehicle builds up mileage on the odometer when it's being towed?

Patti:

We've been told that our Jeep Cherokee will not incur mileage while being towed, and a preliminary non-tow test seems to confirm that... we hooked up the Jeep to the LD just yesterday in preparation to leave snowy New England soon, but haven't yet towed it.
We've also looked at a Subaru for a second car, possibly for towing, but found that the mileage will run up under tow.   So, I guess it depends on what make and model you have or get.

We did learn, however, that you need to ask various folks before getting a definative reply on this topic, as we've had different opinions given by car salesmen, car dealership mntc managers, vs. written documentation!

Good luck

Not if you follow the Honda directions.  I once left the ignition on, then the miles added up.

We have a 2002 CRV as a toad. The proper way to tow is to have the key turned to "Accessory" position and the electronic odometer will not record mileage. If turned to the "ON" position it will and it may cause battery discharge and possibly engine ignition problems (not positive about that). It tows great.

We tow a Saturn and it doesn't record mileage........you have to be sure it is in the right gear .neutral, and it has to be manual shift...... works great ! Have a Blue Ox hitch.  We're waiting for our 30 IB.  What is your number?  We are expecting during April too.  Ordered it on August 22.

Thanks

What good news.  Our number is 7892; we purchased on 9/16/02 so we're about a month behind you.  We're moving up from tents and a tent trailer to an RV so quite exciting, but we'll continue to 'tent' camp when backpacking.

Thank you for the help!
Now if I can just figure out how to stop the yahoo s that are on each of the incoming e-mails from this group, I'll be doing great' :-)

Thanks for your number.  We are SO ANXIOUS to have our new 30 footer.  It will be longer, but not much more, and we hope to head south every winter and spend time in a warm climate during March and April.  Colorado is COLD ......just got more snow last night.

In order to keep the  battery from running down when our Chevy (Geo) Prizm (=Toyota Corolla) has the ignition key "on" while towing: We disconnect the battery ground.  We use a disconnect switch on the battery's ground terminal.
The lack of electrical power turns off the odometer.  The miles under tow don't register.

When we hook up the battery, we have to reset the clock.

some do and some don't
We have a wonderful little Saturn which is stick shift.  You hitch it up and put it in the correct gear........neutral I think........and it doesn't accumulate mileage.  Great car and tows well behind us with a Blue Ox hitch.
You don't even know its there, unless of course you are passing someone, in which case you have to allow extra room.  Also........you can not back up while towing.  You must unhitch, which is a little nuisance, but you need to plan ahead at gas stations and we like pull throughs at campgrounds.
