Transmission problems February 25, 2003, 05:38:14 pm Yahoo Message Number: 19302We have a 2002 26.5 RB and have recently had some problems with the Automatic Transmission. Thought I'd pass them along in case any of you may have or are having similar ones. A few weeks ago, the transmission started hanging up in high gear when starting out from a stop. At first, if I'd manually shift down to 1st, and them back to Drive, it would sort itself out after a couple of manual shifts. The second time this happend, I took it in to a Ford Truck Dealership and they checked the "Stall Speed" of the transmission, ran a computer diagnostic, and said all was well. (It had stopped the hanging up by the time I got to the truck dealership) Last week, we were returning from the last leg of a 1000 mile trip when it started to hang up again once we were back in stop and go traffic here in Long Beach. The next day, while driving over to the storage facility, it still hung up, and now it wouldn't even shift manually to 1st, but only to 2nd. At the same time, I got a "Service Engine Soon" advisory on the panel and got a flashing "Off" signal on the end of the gear shift lever. (Normally seen when out of overdrive, and not flashing) Called the Ford dealership, and they urged me to come in "right now". The problem was a faulty/broken shift-pressure ring, which they replaced under warranty, which solved the problem. They told me, however, that any prolonged driving after the light appears with this part as the cause, usually ends up with metal in the transmission and a replacement rebuilt transmission required. When the warranty calls for a transmission replacement, what is provided is a factory rebuilt unit, with a 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty. (same warranty as the original) Didn't have to go that far, but sure glad we didn't have to run very far to get repairs after the warning light illuminated. Thought if anyone else was having similar problems, this data might help.
