Hot or cold in 26MB Lazy Daze?
Yahoo Message Number: 19060
My wife and I are still LD wannabes.  We like the 26' mid bath, because of the nice lounge and sleeping area with the large windows.
However, we were wondering if the large window area poses a problem with it being either too cold in colder weather or too hot in the summer.   It's unlikely that we'd find ourselves in anything like 20 degrees or less.  We're pretty much fair weather rv'ers.   However, since we live in the southwest, it can get pretty hot out there.
Would the lounge are in the MB be very difficult to keep cool?  If anyone out there has experience or an opinion, we'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

Richard

Richard,
I haven't found the large windows to be a problem with heat in summer since they are dark tinted and we normally keep the shades closed on the sunny side during the day in hot weather if it is shining through. If you find it to be too hot with the shades up and want to be able to see out the sunny side when the sunis shining in there are sun shades that are made of a mesh material that allow you to see out and block most of the sun and heat and add insulation to the windows.
They have both inside and outside ones available. There are also several other ways of reducing the heat or cold from being a problem either with insulating materials or the heat shrink window film like that used for winter insulation in colder climate areas. The film creates a dead air space and improves the insulating properties just like thermopane windows do. With the new 2003 LDs they also have true thermopane windows that have an air gap and they will make a big difference. The older models like mine have laminated dual pane glass windows and they aren't as efficient.
Using 12vDC fans to help circulate the air better also helps keep the interior cooler in hot weather and helps eliminate cold spots in cold weather similar to using ceiling fans in your home. We use them in our LD and it helps both the A/C and the furnace so they don't cycle on/off as often.

If you search the archives there are lots of good suggestions for both hot and cold weather camping. There are also several suggestions in the LD manual that help.

If you get a new model, opt for the opaque shades. They were standard with the old-style blinds, but apparently an option now. However, with the shades up, the windows are DEEPLY tinted. They will refect most of the heat and much of the light. The roof air will keep up with demand, but if you boondock that isn't a great method. Older models with swamp coolers will do ok, as long as they run 100% of the time.

Even with the large windows, we have not had any serious problems in either roaring hot or bitter cold.  If you pull down the shades to keep out the sun, it helps in very hot weather.  In the cold weather your main problem wil be the metal window frames - they seem to radiate cold.  But we put a towel over the bottom metal and everything stays cozy.  Below about 35 degrees, make sure you vent the rig with the Fantastic Fan (low works for us) so you don't condense shower or cooking vapor on the windows.  If it happens, run the fan on high an it clears up the condensation in a few minutes.
We adore those large windows.  On our first campout we realized that the critters could not see in, unlike previous rigs, and I actually witnessed a squirrel and a raven fighting over peanuts we had placed out for them.  You'll love them too.

Richard, As a newbee to LDing I took the suggestion of many to use a product called Reflectix, an air incapsulated plastic ( bubble wrap ) with foil backings to insulate against cold and direct sunlight in the summer heat.  The product is light weight but somewhat bulky, but stores well in the overheads of the MB. It's easy to install when needed.  Simply slide it under the bottom lip of the shade and pull the shade down over it.
The cost is nominal; About $25 for a roll that will cover the three windows and one over the dinette.
Even without the Reflectix our 15K AC was able to tame the 106 degree Arizona heat.
I cannot comment on the effectiveness of the 2003 windows and shades since ours is a 2002.

Hello Richard, Well, we have had our "Teal Tortoise" (a 2002 26.5 MB) for 10 days short of one year, and I know my wife Joanne will concur that one of the very best features of the Mid Bath is the beautiful 'room with a view' in the back.

Our travels have taken us from temperatures in the low 100's to 17 degrees and snow on our newly acquired property in northwest Arizona.

On several occasions during the year, we have discussed the 30' Island Bed as an up-grade (down the road), and every time, have ruled it out because of the; as I called it, 'room with a view.'
We do, on very hot days, lower the blinds back there when not in use, and that keeps the coach much cooler. Bear in mind that these windows are dual pane glass and are very darkly tinted (limo tint) and that alone helps to keep it cool.

During Christmas when we were in the snow in northern Arizona, we experienced some very low temperatures, but nothing that the propane heater didn't resolve at a low setting of about 68-70 degrees.
All in all Richard, I would tell you that we wouldn't trade our 'room with a view' or any other part of the Mid Bath (except the Sony radio) (prefer the Ford factory model) and Joanne and I both agree that our Teal Tortoise is just the 'bees knees'
Hope this helps. If you have any other questions for me, the best way is to e-mail me at  and put Lazy Daze in the subject (so I don't erase you because I don't recognize your address).

Yours.
One Happy Camper! Vernon

--- This winter I've been full-timing in Central/Southern Arizona and Northern New Mexico. Many nights in the low 30's. The frost left a gift of dazzling frost patterns on the Saturn windows the other morning when I was parked on a canyon road outside of Patagonia.
I bookdock most of the time on BLM and NFS land. I just use the little Catalytic Heater. Very low Propane use and no 12-volt use. Sure you loose heat via the windows, but I sure wouldn't anything but this wonderful Lazy Daze with all her big windows. Most nights, especially in the high deserts, I leave the shades open so I can just lie in bed and look up at the zillions of stars.

Does it get any better than this? ~^_^~ Sarah, Mz. Daisy and the Toad in Casa Grande, AZ

You sound as if you are having so much fun, we can't stand it.  We're waiting for our 30 foot IB and may have to go rent a moho and go camping.  We had one which we sold last fall, and our new Teal Baby will be readin in April, we hope.

Take care and have fun in Arizona.
