water heater shuts itself off

Again, when we were winter camping, where outside temperature got to 15-17 degrees a couple times during the trip, left the water heater on all night to keep it from freezing.  Got up in the middle of the night and the water heater had turned itself off, and the red light was on.  Hit the on switch and it started up fine.  This happened a couple times.  It was not windy outside either night.  Took this to an RV shop and they said it checked out fine.  Having it turn itself off does not let me sleep comfortably worrying about things freezing.  Had anyone else encountered this?  Any ideas on solutions?  I bought the RV in California and brought it back to Colorado.  Do I need to adjust the flame?  Thanks for any thoughts.

There's info in you LD manual or the WH Manual that indicates that when the desired temperature is reached the Water heater will disable a restart for a certain amount of time. That can be overriden by doing what the instructions say to restart the water heater. That's a saftety factor to keep the water from boiling but if you restart it after that time period expires and before the temp drops to where it would auto restart, you can manually restart it. But, it'll only run until that preset temperature is reached again. The red light that is on indicated that the heater is on and has reached the shutoff point.

Since you also have a problem with another propane appliance, I would look first at the source. If there is water in the propane tank - e.g. a new tank that was not properly purged before first fill, then at those temperatures the tank plumbing could be freezing shut and rethawing, causing your appliances fits - particularly at high flow rates. Another possibility is improper fuel mixtures for your altitude. Get advice there from local suppliers of residential propane, such as AmeriGas. A manometer for checking your system pressure is pretty easy to rig up - do a web search.

Was the hot water hot when the water heater turned itself off?  I've noticed that it doesn't take long to heat water, and once it is heated, it stays hot for a considerable length of time without restarting.
Don't know about the red light, though.
