adding a generator to '92 LD? Reply #1 – January 12, 2001, 06:52:48 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1580Hi Karen, First ask youself why do you want a generator. Lights and water can be handled OK by the 12 V sustem. THe swamp cooler also is 12 V and works great in dry areas. You can recharge the house batteries faster with the coach motor than you can with the generator. If you want to use the microwave and the AC then you have to have 120 V power. I think most of the folks with older, like pre 98 units get along just fine without a generator.I am thinking of adding solar and a 12 V inverter to keep the coach batteries up and to provide limited 120 V power. The forward passenger side bay on my 97 26.5 MB has a label on it that says the bay has to be replaced with a reinforced bay to handle the weight of a generator. The factory could tell you about that and I think they would be the best place to have either the solar or the generator installed. Or both if you want.Ask your self first if you really need it or do you just want the generator. You cannot hear yours running when you are inside the unit, but to anyone else it is very anoying. Like a lawnmower next door.Sterling in Bend, OR

Reply #2 – January 13, 2001, 03:33:49 pm Yahoo Message Number: 1585Hi Sterling, The point of excessive noise is well taken but we'd only use it when boondocking away from other people. We have 36 acres in Colorado and need a place to stay while we build. No neighbors to disturb. :-) We may go with a portable if we have to but it would be easier to have it built in. I'd hate to give up the microwave and my husband will need power tools. We'll have to look closely at the LD we want to buy. I didn't know that some models aren't generator ready.Karen
