Portable Gas Grill
My grill died on our recent trip to San Simeon. Looking for a replacement, preferably one that fits in the skinny aft compartments of a MB. Any recommendations?

I use a Volcano grill, it packs up pretty small and can be used as a fire pit with wood too.
It gets hot quickly so it can cook up things pretty fast, I need to pay attention or it will overcook things.
Fits nicely on my rack once the bike is removed.

You will NOT find a better quality than a Napoleon! Pricy, yes! Best features, yes! The one I have is far too large for my needs but it's performance is beyond criticism.   ;)

100% agree!  We carry the Travel-Q 285 in red (with the extra griddle plates) and it "smokes" the Weber Q we used to carry.

Amazon.com: Napoleon Grills TQ285-RD-A Travelq 285 Portable Gas Grill, Red :...

ETA - doesn't appear to be in stock at the 'Zon currently, so here's the blue one without the griddle plates  https://www.amazon.com/Napoleon-TQ285-BL-1-Propane-Gas-Grill/dp/B07PJWC21W

Hose to connect to standard LP tank instead of small bottles:

I know that this Cuisinart fits because I purchased one last week, and it's in my rig now.  I have not had a chance to use it yet.

"Hose to connect to standard LP tank instead..."

I had a 'T' inserted between the output of the main LP tank and the LD regulator. With the leg of the T pointed upward, I then attached a 15lb regulator and a cutoff valve. From the low pressure regulator I ran a 12' hose under the rig and into a storage compartment on the patio/passenger side. Another shorter hose connects to my grill and allows me to place it for best convenience.  :D

With this additional regulator, I'm guessing you went with Napoleon's RV adapter (which is basically a kit to remove the on-grill regulator and replace the hose with a quick-connect version)?

That is one I had looked at but the dimensions say it's 13" high. I'm assuming that is with the legs expanded. What does it measure with the legs contracted?  My MB opening is about 9.5".

Also, my preference is for a grill that accepts the small 1lb. propane bottles as I have no good way to transport the larger bottles, unless I put in the toad which I don't always take.

My gray and white matter are confused on that, but as I recall I did not know there was an 'RV adapter' and just put a quick release together with readily available parts. So yes, there is a quick disconnect involved!  ;)

I just measured, and the grill is 9" even with the legs folded.  It slips right in.  One thing I did notice is that the grill is "tippy" with the legs folded -- so you might want to put it on a towel or something if you don't want it rocking back and forth.

And yes, it uses the 1# bottles.  I just checked that too, and it fired right up.   There's an igniter built into the flame control.

FWIW, you can also use the more basic models like this one.  You just have to put the grill and the lid in separately.

Thanks!

The one I have now is a Weber and similar to the Char-broil unit you linked to.  It does fit in the compartment but, as you mentioned, you have to take the lid off, slid the base in, then put the lid back on inside the compartment which is a PITA.

Edit:  Just ordered the Cuisinart grill.  Thanks to all who responded!

Followed the link - they include a nonsense frame showing another device smoking with wood chips. Did they enclose some sort of such tray with yours?

Steve, I saw that as well.  I think someone did a boo-boo. Unfortunately, smoker not included.  :(

We use the Napoleon portable grill.  It fits in one of our MB outside compartments and performs as well as our larger Weber grill at home.

Hi, Ross.  Good to know the Napoleon fits as well.  Guess I'm a little adverse (cheap) to spending $300+ for a portable grill that doesn't get used very often.   :D

Just received the Cuisinart CGG-180T and confirmed it fits through the aft compartment doors with 1/2" to spare!  :)  Next step is to give it a test run.  Thanks all!

Michelle,  I did this to my baby-q that I have been using for better part of 20 + years.  Love the way it cooks.  Need to put the quick connect on my MB still.  Have to remove lid as others have said to get it in compartment under dinette.  But your previous comment intrigues me....  smokes the weber.  Can you elaborate more in case I want to upgrade?
Thanks,

Ramon,

We found that it heats up more quickly, heats/cooks more evenly, flame adjustment (heat level) seems more responsive and uniform, and is easier to store.  We have had 3 Weber Q models over the years and after the first cook on the Napoleon 285 it just felt like a better grill all-around.  Probably the only negative compared to the Q is that the dome height over the food isn't a great, so if you're cooking something that needs the lid closed, you might have a height clearance issue.  You'll have to spatchcock that chicken rather than doing a vertical roaster.

The Napoleon 285 has higher BTU output than the baby Q, it’s hard to have too much heat when searing meat.

Thank you Michelle and Larry, I understand now.  Can't say I cook anything too high, I'll need to take a look at one in person and see.  I have noticed that since I have removed the internal weber regulator, using onboard quick connect to my former truck camper, the pressure or gas flow is a little more reduced.  Seems to run better on its own regulator.  Maybe in retirement when BBq'ing will be more often, I can justify a new grill.    ;)

Thanks again!
