4R100 seal replacement help
Hello All,

We need some assistance. we are on day one of summer trip.
Looks like we blew the shifter shaft seal on side of transmission. we have 2000 ford e450 v10 with 4r100 tranny. I had trans pan, gasket and filter replacement 2 weeks ago. now 300 miles later we are spewing fluid. Is this a repair seal replacement that can be done in field. very little online for 4r100.

looking for answer as I have been to 4 repair shops locally and noone can touch, not even walt's ford in Live oak fl.

TIA

Please make sure the transmission isn't overfilled before taking it apart.

It looks like a messy field repair if you can access it. Checking the 2003 Factory Shop manual, it appears the shift shaft is secured inside the bottom of the transmission, meaning the transmission needs to be drained and the pan removed to access the inner nut. The shift position sensor needs to be removed, mark it to aid in getting it back into same the position to avoid having to adjust the shift detents.
Removing and replacing old seals can be a challenge in tight quarters. A slide internal puller can be handy.

Use a shift shaft repair kit to eliminate leakage from a worn shaft. It's good insurance.

Seal.          I think these are the right parts.

UPDATE:

I'm sorry for the delay in updating all, we have been recuperating and hiding out.  we appreciate the responses. it turned out to be a bad gasket that was replaced. Then it was still leaking fluid, and it turned out it was coming out the overflow when tranny was getting hot. Finally, the mechanics determined the trans cooler inside the radiator had gotten clogged. Bypassed the cooler and added a new stand-alone unit to front behind grill. Now everything is working and cooling correctly. However, my pocketbook is stinging from emergency roadside. repair after 7 pm

Hi George;  Glad that you are up and running now.  The auxiliary tranny cooler is a better idea, and many of us have installed those as a precaution anyway. I'm surprised that after repairs they would put too much fluid in, that it would come out the filler.
All fluids expand when hot, and the transmission dip stick would have shown this problem.  I have the same transmission, a year older, so I'm hoping I don't have the same failure on the shifter seal that you had.  RonB
