LED Lights in 2011 TK - what screw heads are these?
Hi LD fam!

I am attempting to remove a single rocker switch light from my cabover to install a Caframo fan in its place.

The hex head screws don't seem to fit any of the adapters I have (tried metric and imperial). I feel like a fool. Is this a proprietary size? I have a message out to Progressive Dynamics because it seems they are the manufacturer just by comparing pics.

Progressive Dynamics Single Dome LED Interior Ceiling Light - White with...

Seems so simple.

Any advice from the forum?

TIA!

Pretty sure those hex head screws are provided by Laze Daze and not the manufacturer of lighting fixture.

As to what size, whether it’s metric or imperial, couldn’t say, but this reminds me that my set of nut drivers has too many gaps in sizes to be useful on the road.

Is it a Robertson screw head?? They are a 4 sided square bit in different sizes.

It looks to me like either a 1/4" or a 5/16" hex head. Red or yellow handle nut driver should do the trick for you.

"...my set of nut drivers has too many gaps in sizes..."

Are we talking 'screws' or 'nuts"? I see them as hex nuts, hence requiring a nut driver of whatever size will work. Curious to know what the opposite side looks like!   ::)

Thinking about trying this: Powerbuilt Flexible Hose Clamp Driver 1/4 Inch and 5/16 Inch, Auto Specialty...

I think the head of my nut driver is just too large to recess into the plastic surround and grab the nut. This one at least has a taper on the end.

Feel like I am going nuts trying to figure out this seemingly simple problem.  >:(

Progressive Dynamics got back to me and had no answer except to say "I do not have any information on the screw size.  That product has been discontinued."

If you have a 1/4" socket set you might try a socket they could be a little thinner. Have to push pretty hard to get it to grip the screw.

Yes, it would take an extremely thin-walled socket to fit over that hex head. Well, as a last resort, you could take a nut driver with a socket of the appropriate size and heat up the socket over a stove burner until it's hot enough to melt that plastic. Then jam it all the way on and unscrew the screw. Repeat for the other three screws. It'll be messy and smelly, and you'll ruin the socket, but small sockets are cheap.

I use these nut drivers! Read the ad closely to see if they might be what you need!   :o

Hi Jodi; my lights are all phillips head, but my 1/4" socket set heads, the next smaller size than 1/4" is a 7/32". That might fit. The 1/4" drive sockets have very thin walls, that an adaptor from a 3/8" drive might not have.

When I replaced that light, I had to destroy the OEM. Tried but was unsuccessful in getting any tool on those awful 1/4" head screws.

My dad took a 1/4” nut driver - ground down the outside and presto magic.

Hope this saves someone from frustration in the future.

Now I have to keep track of this little modified piece for next time I want to remove one of the lights. 😳

Thanks for all the suggestions!!

One of the blinds fell off its roller on the way home in 2013.   Rather than a 1,000 mile round trip, Vince sent me a replacement blind, as well as their 'specialized installation tool' that he needed back.   It was a 1/4" nut driver with a ground taper to fit into tight places.  I've resolved to get out the grinder if I need to get it off again.
