12v Charger on Pax Side Dash

We were discussing these chargers in another thread a few days ago. I want to install a cigarette lighter type in the dash on the pax side. Something like this: charger It will be used only for plugging in an iPhone or iPad while driving. For those of you that have done this, did you run a dedicated wire to the fuse box or did you tap into an existing 12 volt source? Also, Andy warned about being careful of the quality of some of these. Any recommendations? Photo of your install? Thanks.

Hi Jor;  I used an older dual USB port without the blue light or flap. (no voltmeter either.) I wired it into the CB radio wire under the dash and increased the size of the fuse under the hood for the CB.  Power comes from the LiF house batteries, so power use isn't a problem.
I don't have a picture (yet) but I had to remove the steel crash panel behind the plastic dash to make a hole to match the hole in the plastic.  The panel is to prevent submarining under the dash in the event of a crash. My plug required enough room behind the dash that I had to miss a few things in the heat/AC ductwork.  It is handy for my passenger to keep her phone (my enhanced GPS) working.  She fills in commentary on some of the historic sights along the highway, predicts sightseeing spots, gas stations, campground evaluations, etc.   RonB

Thanks, Ron. I didn't get any suggestions for a couple of days so I went ahead and did it today. I found an unswitched unused 12 volt wire under the dash near the fuse block and used that. The gizmo I got has an on/off switch so no problem with the parasitic start battery drain. When I first looked at it I figured I would do as you did and hole the crash panel (I didn't know there was such a thing, thanks) but on second thought there was room to the right of the steel panel so I was able to drill only the plastic trim piece. Anyhow, it works fine. Good to go.

I have used Blue Sky USB wall plugs for years.  Decent quality.

Can't go wrong with BlueSea, Larry. No USB-C port however. For this little device, I went with a pig in a poke. If it sets my dash on fire, I'll have to do a little more research for the next one!  ;D  ;D
