Demco/SMI actuator repair
The most common failure of the Demco tow brake unit is a broken cable on the air actuator cylinder that is mounted on the brake pedal.
Etailer now carries a repair kit that isn't too hard to use and a lot costs less than a new air cylinder.

I repaired my Stay-in-Play Duo's air cylinder with this kit. If you have an older cylinder you may have a bit of trouble disassembling it. Once you have replaced the cable on an older cylinder you don't have the same problem with disassembly; removal, repair and replacement takes under a half-hour with the cable in hand. I carried a spare cable.

If you mount the cylinder too close to the firewall the cable develops a kink, and eventually breaks there. The second time the cable broke I moved the cylinder away from the firewall by reversing the mounting brackets. That should have reduced or eliminated the kinking. I don't know, as I've sold the car.
