2013 31 IB :Leaking 4008 pump - moving part that shouldn't be moving....
JOMHO: Joys Of Motor Home Ownership  231019 edition

Pump runs intermittently  (in suspicious fashion) when water not used.
Damp throw rug pax side.  Pulled the drawer to find a bit of standing water, much more than could  be attributed to a 5# dog.
Visual inspection showed pump not quite right in the head.  When water turned on  gap on Left increased somewhat.
Fortunately we are moochdocking with family outside of Las Vegas.  New pump due here this afternoon compliments of the 21st century Sears Catalog - Amazon.
Questions:
1.  Does head just need tightening?
2.  Will head replacement suffice?
3.  Complete pump replacement?

Given stable moochdock situation, I'm favoring #3.   Options #1 or #2 can provide a spare do be done in one's copious free time.
Any other suggestions?

I'm for replacement and throw the old one or fix it and keep it around for fluid transfers. I changed out mine a couple months ago. A little tight but not too bad. As other members recommended, I pulled out the converter which gives you more room. I also put one of those little leak detectors in there. They work great. Saved me some grief on another rig.

If you must change a water pump, the 31' Island Bed is the easiest floorplan to work on, the bed lifts up, exposing the water pump.
We always have a new pump stored away for these occasions, for our use or to help a friend in need, it has been used several times over the years.

I have never seen a pump unbolt itself like Joel's, add another thing to the maintenance list to look at occasionally.

Turns out one of the corner bolts unbolted and the head slightly separated.  Easy replacement on 31 IB

Here’s a tool I found that I may have already mentioned. This little gadget can make tight fit bolt/screw removal an easier task.

I purchased a Blackhawk brand rotator ratchet on Amazon (no longer available) when I had difficulty removing a seat bolt on my DW’s Can-Am seat bolt. The tool now resides in the LD for water pump or similarly tight spots.

A handy tool to remove unneeded stress during unanticipated repairs in tight spaces.

I know that many of you carry a replacement water pump. I’d like to also do that. I have a 2012, 27’, rear bath. What is used a replacement pump? I also would like to know if parts can be purchased from the mother ship. I need some green paint for touching up the outside of my rig. Thanks in advance.

Removed pump. 1 1/2" bolt would not tighten and thought housing might have stripped.  Obtained 2" 10x32 bolt, washers and nuts.
Bolt went in and cinched down the head. Due to curvature of housing, there is no room for a nut, but it seemed tight.  Reinstalled and padded with paper toweling.   Will check later to see if leak has stopped.   New replacement pump arrived a few hours later.
Will monitor.

As reported here years ago, my 4008 pump installed at the Mothership actually had the screws fall completely out!  Some rough roads, but really? It was put back together with bolts and nuts, before the replacement pump even arrived. New one is still in storage as a spare (with bolts-and-nuts instead of screws), but on the older replacement pump that's still in use, the bolts have held perfectly ever since.

You could check with Todd for a pump, but this is something you can buy off the shelf.

I carry the RV Water Pump Shurflo 4008-101-A65 3.0 GPM as a spare.
