Rear Differential Magnetic plug November 17, 2022, 03:39:33 pm I checked the rear diff oil on my 2016 a while back and found quite a build up of fine ferrous "dust" on the fill plug. I cleaned it off and decided to order a new Gold Plug super magnet plug. Next time I pulled it months later to install the gold plug, I found another small deposit of the material. The picture shows the gray material rubbed off onto a paper towel. Not concerned too much about it, as all gearboxes will shed very fine particles as they wear in. I just want to catch future particles as much as I can to maximize the life of the rear diff. Here is a neat video showing what is going on inside your differential, Banks is demonstrating how a stock diff cover is quite good. He has developed an improved cover but I'm not biting on it.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-yG3D3JBRs 4 Likes

Re: Rear Differential Magnetic plug Reply #2 – November 17, 2022, 08:16:26 pm The black 'dust' or fuzz is normal to find on magnetic plugs. It's the big chunks that you hate to find.Sticking a good size super magnet to the inside of the rear axle cover is another common way to collect the metal filings. The magnet is cleaned when the cover is off during axle fluid changes.Larry
Re: Rear Differential Magnetic plug Reply #3 – November 17, 2022, 10:12:15 pm I am preparing for my first gear oil change. And, I had planned to install a Gold plug. I’ve not found the model number, though. Might you share it, and your source?Post Edit: From the posted photo, it seems that the Gold Plug, size IP-06X, is available from this source… 3/4″ NPT Industrial Gold Plug Magnetic Drain Plug External Head IP-06X -...Warren
Re: Rear Differential Magnetic plug Reply #4 – November 18, 2022, 08:26:11 pm I did order the mag plug directly from Goldplug.com, the IP-06X fit just fine. My 2016 has the Dana 70HD, conventional rear axle (not limited slip). It uses the 75W-90 synthetic from the factory. I haven't hit 20,000 miles yet, so leaving it in there for a bit longer. The fluid was a clear amber color, looked great. 1 Likes
