Bargman 10-30-010 Door Latch Replacement
I imagine this has been covered.  How do I search this forum?
I have a Bargman 10-30-010 on my 26.5 entry door. I see Bargman is gone but several manufacturers advertising replacements but none seem to match dimensions etc.
I am unable to use the key to lock the door from the outside
The key rotates left and right  which moves the black knob on the inside about an 1/8 of an inch but does not lock the door.  The above deadbolt functions just fine with the key so maybe I don’t need the bottom lock working. I would like it too if possible.
Can anyone give me a bonified replacement number or is it a matter of trying to make do with what’s available?

I’m not sure what was going on with the strike plate as seen in the included picture but it’s ugly.
Thanks

Hi BD;  The search function is on a pull down menu under 'Community'. Second one down.  The door jamb looks like the door was forced open.  There is no longer a stock of replacement locks since Bargeman stopped making them in about 2006.  If I ever need to replace mine, I plan to adapt and fit one of the newer and smaller electronic locks into place with a stainless outer and inner plate.  Like you my dead bolt lock isn't connected to the other latch and still works, so I plan to keep it.
Junk yards for RV parts must exist somewhere. There may be slightly used locks out there somewhere.  I don't like the newer doors which require lifting up on the handle to unlatch the door to get out.  Somebody's idea of a child proof mechanism?   Maybe dogs are tall enough and heavy enough to actually open the door unattended?          link to lock comments:  1987 door lock           RonB

Mine’s doing the exact same thing — minus the strikeplate deformity.

In my prior reading of this forum (going through old posts), I seem to remember reading about someone taking theirs apart and replacing the springs with new ones purchased at Ace Hardware.

On my list this winter is looking for those posts, and taking my entry lock apart in an attempt to resurrect it.

Edit: I think this is the link I was remembering -- that Ron B was able to dig up in that older thread... Repairing a Bargman L300 Coach Door Lock (replace spring)

2nd Edit: Google search resulted in a fiberglass rv forum discussion of someone replacing the L300 on their Trillium RV with a Trimark 31158-01-K.  Not including the link to that forum as I don't know the rules related to that.

I am NOT sure if we could do the same thing, but others with much more experience than I (which isn't saying much) may be able to guide us on that.

I hope this is all helpful.

Hi Jason and BonesD;  That reference of this electronic lock AP Products 013-531 Bauer Motor Home Door Lock | eBay  seems to think that it can replace the Bargeman lock with little or no reconfiguration of the door or strike.  Price a bit high. Interesting to note that the trailer qualified latch is weaker (no humans in the trailer) and that for a motorhome the stronger version with hardened steel strike plate is required.    I'm tempted to purchase this ahead of need, knowing that these replacements for an obsolete lock that disappeared in 2006 (16 years ago) may not be available much longer either.  I'd put in Lithium AA batteries for durability and cold weather operation.  Maybe a wired back up with a 'buck' voltage reducer to the house batteries.   RonB

And another EBay one for $345.00  :  AP Products 013-531 Bauer Motor Home Door Lock | eBay

As others have stated it is pretty easy to get into a motorhome other ways, But these locksets would keep appearances up and feel more secure while underway.

I have the same Bargman door lock and have had intermittent problems with it. I have not replaced the spring yet, but have found turning the push/pull knob after spraying some lube inside the lock, seems to restore the locking function. Whenever it stops locking, I simply turn the knob to retighten it. Works for me.

I count on the deadbolt lock to secure the door. It may be time to visit Ace Hardware for a new spring for the latch lock though.

The biggest problem with this Bargeman L300 lock, a design issue, is when the lock button gets depressed even just a little, it locks the bolt and it won't slide in when the bevel hits the strike plate.  It's supposed to do that.  But when you slam the door shut, it hits that bolt and won't close.  So you have to open the door, pull the lock (little mushroom cap inside) out, then reclose it. Who knows what damage is going on inside the lock.  At least when accidentally pushed a little, and you close it, it doesn't lock behind you. That could be really inconvenient if you didn't have a key with you.
I can't remember exactly, but I did have to take the lock apart, and it wasn't a grease issue, but it was a wear issue.  I seem to remember filing something down inside to restore it's ability to lock.  Wish I could remember what I did. It was a while ago, and If it had been very involved I would have remembered it more.  Only the inside plate was removed, the rest of the mechanism stays in place. And you can't use Locktite on the screw because it has to be removed (unscrewed) to get the cover off.  I used blue Locktite anyway. It can still be unscrewed but will be a bit stiffer. It hasn't come loose since then.   RonB

Our 2003's Bargmsan lock still works fine, we do not use its door lock, instead relying on the deadbolt. If someone wants to break in, it is only going to take a few moments to jimmy the door or break a window.

The Bargman lock can be disassembled for cleaning and lubrication. Our LD's Bargman has received this treatment two times over the last 20 years. Many times, this is all the lock needs for proper operation, assuming nothing is broken or badly worn.
There are two small springs in the exterior handle that when worn allow the handle to rattle. I have found replacement springs at ACE and True Value hardware stores and not at Home Depot or Lowes.

We have not heard what the OP has done with the lock, cleaning and lubing may fix it.

Another possibility is to buy an old lock and use it for either parts or a total replacement. The older locks usually need repainting,
Repairing or replacing with the same lock is going to be the easiest way to solve the door lock problem.

If the door is accidentally locking itself when shammed shut, the locking pin can be glued in the open position and then, as we do, only use the upper deadbolt to lock the door.
Setting two locks is waste of time, the door can be jimmied open in a moment with a big screwdriver or pry bar. If someone wants in, when you are gone, you can't stop them.

Hi Larry, thanks for that source of old locks!  Me thinks I can make a spare inner part using a friends machine shop with vertical end mill, if the need arises. They are pretty simple inside.  As you said, it is mostly a delaying tactic, to keep honest people out. Accidents do happen. (Used to be a lot of blue motorhomes at a LD rally, and they all do look alike!)   I can pick them almost as fast as someone with a real key can open them.  RonB

Sorry, I have not attempted to do anything to it as yet and have just been using the deadbolt.  It’s on my list though.
Thanks
