Known as the Old Gardiner Road, it previously consisted of a single lane with few guard rails and was used mainly by bicyclists and occasional four-wheel drive vehicles.The route, built with emergency federal funding, had to be widened and paved to highway specifications to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer who enter Yellowstone through its historic Roosevelt Arch, a stone landmark built in Gardiner, Mont., in 1903. The “New” road, being constructed on Old Gardner Road, avoids the flood risk of the Gardner river but crosses the path of another major geological hazard, an unstable slope prone to land slide (look above Slide Lake on a satellite map). Nature, especially in Yellowstone country, will have its way with all the pretty things we humans create. I expect that the new road should be good for our lifetime, however. 1 Likes
