Rear view camera
We have a 2015 MB with the factory installed rear view camera which I would like to replace. We do not tow (use Enterprise rent-a-car when needed), so we are looking for something that will function as a rear view mirror.  Questions,  Would you recommend hard wired or wireless? I like the idea of replacing the existing rear view mirror with the camera screen rather than having the screen mounted above the mirror as that would be easier to see. Has anyone done this? What are your thoughts and recommendations, both regarding the questions I have raised, but any recommended brands or other thoughts on the matter?

Our LD's rear-view mirror is almost worthless, I can see little to the rear so the rear camera and monitor are on whenever we are driving.
A rear-view mirror monitor makes good sense being located where we normally look to see what is happening to the rear.

I always suggest a hard-wire camera system, having less technology to go wrong. It is more effort to install but it solves the "how to power the rear camera" question. The cable supplies power to the camera.

We have used both. We had a hard-wired rear-view camera on our mid-bath. From the roof to the monitor we used the refrigerator chimney to get the wire into the LD. I mounted the monitor above the mirror. The wire was attached to the roof rail and then clipped to the roof. Had to be careful when cleaning the roof to not pull the cable. The only problem we had was that sometimes moisture would get into the camera and the monitor would be hazy for several hours until the camera dried out. On our current LD, a RK, I have installed a wireless rear view camera system. The camera is wired to the center rear clearance light and so it is on when the parking or headlights are on which is when ever we drive. I have had no problems so far with the system. A very clear picture. The monitor is mounted to the windshield above the mirror. I did not think of taking the mirror out and lowering the mounting of the rear view monitor but that is a great idea.

"The only problem we had was that sometimes moisture would get into the camera and the monitor would be hazy for several hours until the camera dried out."

The most common reason for this is water running down the cable from the roof and entering the camera through the supposedly sealed (but not really) gland on the rear of the camera housing. I ruined--drowned!--two different cameras this way before I figured out what was happening.

The solution is simple: leave a "drip loop" extending below the camera, as shown here:

This reduces the length of cable above the camera to only an inch or so, so you won't get runoff from the roof coming all the way down and forcing its way into the camera.
