Yosemite fires
My daughter lives in Coarsegold, just off Hwy 41 on the way into Yosemite.  There are currently 3 fires between her house and Yosemite.  The first 3 pics were taken this afternoon from her house.  The 4th is from the local news channel and is the park entrance pay station.  The road to the left goes into Yosemite Valley, the road to the right goes up to the redwoods.

Edit: The fire at the entrance to the park is called the Washburn Oak fire.  It started at 2:00pm today and now at 10:00pm it’s burned 4300 acres.

Bit of correction, the new fire that has closed the entrance via highway 140 is known as the Oak fire.

The Washburn fire started on July 7th and threatened Mariposa grove of Sequoias near the south entrance.

Either way, it’s been a rough summer for Yosemite.

Dave, you’re are correct.  I was texting back and forth all day and much of last night with my daughter about the 3 fires and things were getting a bit confusing.  Currently the only way in and out of Yosemite Valley is by Hwy 120.

Correction has been made in original post.

Wawona has been evacuated, I don’t know about other areas.

I think we are seeing the effects of the fires here in Tehachapi. This is the sunrise view from our garden area this morning.

Heartbreaking, simply heartbreaking.  So much damage that might not recover for decades if ever.  So many lives torn apart.  And bless those firefighters.  I really don’t know how they do it.   🥲

"So much damage that might not recover for decades if ever."

Fire is mother nature's way of cleaning house and as such is beneficial. For the LD folk who are not aware, the outer bark of most 'Redwood' trees is nearly fire proof. Many fires have swept through the groves over the years and the scorched trees are still standing and healthy. The Sequoias are no exception. And, another little known fact is that fire is needed to open the seed pods in order for the forest to regenerate.

So take heart, those old giants will survive and thrive, as they have for centuries.   ;D    ;)

Being an amateur astronomer, I usually check Spaceweather.com on a daily basis. The entry for today (7/25/22) makes reference to the fires in California. See
SpaceWeather.com -- News and information about meteor showers, solar flares,...
(if checking this link on a day other than 7/25/22, go the archives on the right and look for the entry for 7/25/22)
The entry is about 1/2 way down the page. It might be of interest to some.
