RV Fire Data
Interesting article from the US Fire Administration:

Hi Greg;  Interesting article as far as it went.  But no 'smoking gun' as far as source of ignition. (pardon the pun)  pointing to propane being involved in collision damage, or gasoline (diesel) being involved.  Towables still have propane and batteries, and toy haulers can have large amounts of gasoline also.
I guess that boat fires as 'RV's' should be included, but preposterous that a foot note was needed to exclude the $3,000,000,000 Bon Homme Richard ship yard fire.  Hardly 'recreational' as a warship.  Are oil tanker fires included in those statistics?
A more detailed breakdown of suspected causes would have been more useful.  Age of the vehicle, or trailer would be noteworthy.  From nearly new 'assembly' failures, to poor maintenance by age, fires.  Poor brake performance of highly loaded vehicles.  Poor handling of propane cannisters, barbeque grill fuel, fire supplies?  Leaves a lot of questions.
'Exposure' as a cause of fire?  What, next to a house that was on fire, parked in a forest that was on fire?  A lot of that recently in California.  'Intentional'....  Insurance scams of unwanted RV's? or an easy disposal.  Maybe stored in rows upon rows where one catches on fire, and the rest go with it. I seem to remember one case of that in the news recently, reported here actually.     RonB

My thought exactly. I'm grateful to see some data posted, but frustrated at its vagueness with regard to causes.

Hmmm,  36.2% unintentional, 4.2% intentional.   Those two seem to cover the whole gamut.
How do they categorize the other 59%?
I believe the Bonhomme Richard would go in the latter category.... ;)

We went to an escapees boot camp before buying an RV.  Insurance adjuster discussed RV claims.
Propane fires were #1.
I remember 12v wiring was about #5.
I don’t remember 2-4.
But no info on percentages/numbers for each type of claim.

#1 responses to having a propane fire is to turn off the propane at the tank (if you can safely do that) - apparently people battle the fire leaving the propane tank on to feed the fire.
