The reservation part of my trip (Yellowstone/GT) has just ended, next 7-8 weeks are intentionally left open so I can wander without a schedule or deadline.   Looking forward to it in theory, but there is a lot of concern about finding spots.

But I am fine with dispersed camping and out of the way NF campgrounds, so I’m not too worried.

Based on the article seems like you could just talk to park personnel and pay cash for a site.  They know what sites are open.
