Fold Up Table on Back Wall
I want to mount a little fold up table on the back wall of our 27' MB. In searching I've only found one post (> 10 yrs) from someone that has done this. I was hoping to find studs but my studfinder sees none and the construction photos I've seen show that space as free of studs (spare tire area). The poster in the thread I found used the frame structure under the rear window and at the floor and ran the screws in at a 60 degree angle.

Anyone out there in LD land that has done this mod and would like to offer some advice. Thanks.

If you are looking for just a small table between the couches and not a dinner table, then you might consider a C shape table like this one.  I use an oak one that I’ve had for years.  When traveling I just lay it on the couch/bed and it has never moved on me.

Yes, a small table is what I'm interested in. I'd really rather have a folding one rather than a portable one though. While I'm figuring it out I might just pick one of those up as a temp. Looks like it will fill the bill as we just need something to put coffee cups on or maybe a laptop. Thanks.

I use a portable table also. Speaking of a place to put cups, is it worth installing a couple of those folding cup holders in the rear lounge? I had some on my TK but not on the MB.

Hi Jor;  No blocking there, but you can spread the load around. If I had enough time I would have inserted a block inside the wall, but I was working on a friends motorhome and I was running out of time. It was a 2001 MB and I mounted the table in the closet to be like my TK. (in 2017)  RonB

I like this idea. So is that wall 1/2" plywood or what? Thanks.

You need to pick up on the jargon we use... No blocking means that there is no support structure inside the wall! To 'block' means to reinforce. It was with LD that I had my first exposure to that term, Steve Newton, during the ordering session, said he would 'block' a certain wall during construction. That caught me flat-footed because I'd never heard the word in that connotation before.   ;D

I mounted a table using marine brackets on the rear wall without any reinforcement.  I did find it necessary to put a pin in the hinge, to stabilize the table.  Also added an adjustable table leg at the front edge.  No problems.

Jor,

To help you picture the construction of LD interior walls, I’ve included several photos of rigs in the building process.

You can see the framing and the panels used to enclose the interior. The solidly built Lazy Daze is designed to be strong and as light as possible. It’s amazing how well they handle collisions and accidents.

Just the info I'm lookin' for. Thanks, fellas. And I'm increasing my vocabulary too! I'm having a good time making some little changes to this rig. We're going to take a short trip in the next week or so and then probably up to Washington and Oregon. Great little rig. I like it a lot.

I’ve been considering a Lagun table(s).  They can be mounted to the sides of the rear couch(es), eliminating the need to block the back wall.  They can swing out of the way or removed entirely when not in use:

I installed a Lagun table in my midbath, and loved it. They are so versatile and convenient! Easily swing the table to any desired angle, height, and distance, then lock with a twist of a lever.

Lagun sells you the leg and arm assembly; the tabletop is up to you. I used a folding marine teak tabletop, but you could make anything you wanted out of plywood for a lot less money than I paid for that one (imported from Germany). I did have to make a base for the table leg (temporary version shown), because of the way the Lazy Daze's couch base was recessed.

Andy, thanks for reminding me that the Lagun system does not include the tabletop as I had forgotten!

Looking at your photos it appears that, at some point, LD changed the way they construct those couches as mine is not recessed like yours (see photos).  I think a mount could be added pretty easily.  At first I was thinking a mount could be added to the ends of the couch but, taking another look, it's pretty tight on both ends.

Hi Greg;  If you had a 1985 TK, the back table may have been like mine.  In the photo I supplied you may have noticed how many screws there were.  You can do that and you don't need 'blocking' for the table.  The back wall, about 3/16" or 1/4" can take a lot of weight. Just not localized to 4 screws.  Don't try to sit on it, or sort your rock collection on it!  I find that people 'push off' on the corner when getting up, but that load is mostly born by the center leg that supports the table top.  You can use a removable pin hinge if you want to make it removable. If it is the full width table that a TK would have, that wouldn't fit in the closet. I believe later midbaths have a space behind the driver, or a space behind the passenger seat suitable for storage.  Like my TK I would just leave the table down for visibility. It makes the rear dinette space a lot more useable than just a bed platform.   RonB

Yeah, it did, Ron. The table would swing down and rest on the edges of the couch to form the base of the king bed.  As you know, the couches now slide together to form the bed (at least on the MB-not sure about the newer TK's).

The newer TK's still come with a fold up table that stays against the back window when the couches (remember the term 'gaucho'?) are pulled together to form the king sized bed.   RonB

OK, guys, I installed a table in the back. Thanks to all for your suggestions. I just wanted something for a coffee cup or whatever as we have a dinette up front for meals. Anyhow, I ended up using a piece of 1/4" corian. It folds down flat so the couch can still pull out when it's in the down position. It's got a little opening in the back for charging cable or whatever. (gotta think about installing a 120 outlet back there; only three in total).

I secured it to the blocking indicated by the red arrows on either side and to the thin backing in the middle. Very solid. Shoud be useful. Now we just gotta fire this thing up and go somewhere!!!

"I installed a table in the back"

And a beautiful installation it is! Love your choice of Corian as a building material.

And, presuming you have the fold up/down auxiliary shelf at the end of the sink counter top, you would do well to use the same style of mounting brackets and change out the fiberglass shelf for a hardwood cutting board. It will improve your food preparation and you can size the board to whatever dimension works for you.   ;)   ;D
