3M Marine Sealant 5200 (White) Banned in California
Greetings,

I was just at West Marine in Dana Point looking for 3M 5200 sealant in white, and was told that it has been banned in California.  Apparently this does not apply to the black, which seems odd.

Instead I bought a 3 oz tube of 4200 fast cure.  It's half the strength, but I'm thinking that it should suffice for many uses on the LD.  Right now I'm replacing three of the compartment door holders (broken springs), which are held with screws anyway - I just need to seal around the screws.

Opinions?

Thanks,

TIm

4200 is plenty for a job like that.

In the marine industry, the saying is 4200 for something you might need to remove/replace someday.  5200 for something that should never move.  It's a bit of an exaggeration, but I've heard of fiberglass transoms ripped open while trying to replace an outboard b/c it was sealed with 5200.

Some products, like 3M 5200, have a reputation for secure bonding that should not be taken lightly. We’ve seen a 10,000 lb. keel which was put on with 5200 that held so strongly, it practically delaminated the hull during an attempted separation. Use compounds with less tenacious adhesive qualities if you know that you’ll have to remove the item at a future date, for example when bedding deck fittings. 3M’s Fast Cure 4200 has half the strength of 5200, which (with some effort) allows for disassembly of parts.

“3M 5200 sealant in white”

How long does it last?

I am traveling this summer and could pick some up.

3M 5200's storage life is 24 months, according to 3M's data sheet. However, you can't know how long it's been on the shelf before you bought it, so take that as a best case scenario.

The big caulk gun tubes have an expiration date.  You might be able to order it through Amazon despite CA rules. That's where I get my Isopropyl alcohol, and copper/oil based liquid wood preservative.  RonB

A few months ago, I ordered three 3 oz. tubes of 3M 5200 fast cure from West Marine in Santa Cruz; no problem.
