Re: Power is out. (SoCal Fires) Reply #75 – April 14, 2022, 10:52:23 am As much as electric cars are a powerful and silent luxury now, I wonder how California will fare when there are many more of them on the road, replacing internal combustion driven automobiles. After all, in addition to outages caused by wildfires, southern California has brownouts and rolling blackouts on hot days simply caused by people running their air conditioners. What will happen when millions more electric vehicles are charged every evening, drawing off the grid?Rooftop solar and power wall battery systems will be even more important in the foreseeable future.Harold 2 Likes
Re: Power is out. (SoCal Fires) Reply #76 – April 14, 2022, 12:48:24 pm IMO, the move toward ZEV is 'urbocenteric' and not completely thought thru. Rural Counties routinely get short shrift in California anyway, and El Dorado County is no exception. Outside of a corridor along US 50, population is sparse with utilities that go out for days or weeks in rain, snow, wind, or heat events. Long distances and questionable utilities make ZEV trucks for your ranch a fairy tale - more Grimm Bros than Disney 3 Likes

That's ok, we might do a solar/battery system anyway since I believe in redundancy! Disclaimer: photo is not me, just another good looking guy
Re: Power is out. (SoCal Fires) Reply #79 – April 14, 2022, 02:55:06 pm Actually, the battery-backup method has two advantages - silent and instantaneous. Many may switchover before your clocks notice. In general, systems can be usually set up also to switch from battery backup to generator as the batteries get low.BTW, our transfer switch individually switches any or all of 10 circuits. Our cabin has 11 - the garbage disposal. when we use the generator, we switch all ten circuits and turn on the garbage disposal. When we hear it start up, we know power is back. Crude, but it works!Steve 1 Likes
