Radio replacement - add backup camera at the same time?
It’s time to replace the radio that’s in our 2003 LD. I’d like to take advantage of the opportunity to incorporate a backup camera into the mix if it makes sense. From the advice on the Forum, I contacted Crutchfield and talked at length about radio options and installation (I’d recommend them just from the amount of time and knowledge they shared with me).

I found that I could replace the existing radio with one that functions as a touchscreen/monitor and even includes a backup (bumper mount) camera. It seems like I could add cable with RCA connectors to reach the rear of the rv and mount it over the spare compartment as debinvenice and others have done.

The other option is to buy the radio and backup camera/monitor separately.

Wondering from the experts on the forum if any have done this and what their thoughts are.

Thanks!

We bought a separate backup camera that mounted on the license plate and was solar powered and Wireless to the receiver. Problem was the receiver screen was so small and terrible resolution that you could not see anything smaller than a semi:-). We then bought a radio that included a backup camera and the screen is 7 in and much better resolution. I had tried to find a way 2 hook up a camera to my laptop computer which also has my GPS program on. I couldn't find one that was 12 volt. We temporarily do a cool cell phone system with Google Duo call, and just put one in the back window the other one is on the dashboard. This is a great system if you have reception but that is often not the case where we are. Cell phone screens are way sharper.

I replaced our original radio for our 2005 LD’s with a pioneer +GPS radio. I was going to authorize the installer to install a new rear camera, but they informed me that my original camera worked well and stated I’d wasting money on a new camera.

i was thinking about the same setup mentioned, of the radio/touch screen/backup camera. personally decided to not do a touchscreen since it would have blocked the AC controls, and didn't go for it.

But if you don't mind def go for it!! I have also dreamed about these rearview mirror screen that connect to the camera and goes over the rear view mirror so that the video output is in the place you would look for a rearview.

I would also love to have it be recording all the time in case of an accident or just for security (looking out while inside)...

I def feel that the options for RV use just aren't all in one package out there :/
