Repairs of Repairs
There’s some projects we enjoy and others that cause our heads to hurt.  At the top of the hurt list are repairs of repairs.  A few years ago we replaced the nasty blue trim fabric on the top of the dinette backs and on the side of the seats with vinyl that was suppose to last a long time.  It didn’t.  So it had to go.

We’d forgotten that replacing that fabric was a tedious project.   At any rate, we replaced those covers a second time.  Bottom line, repairs of repairs aren’t very enjoyable.

Three years ago I had my cat converter plug up in Alturas California.
The shop I was sent to banged out the plug and sent me on my way.
I was happy, it cost less than a new converter and fixed the problem.
Fast forward to this summer when the check engine light came on.
My EGR valve failed and they couldn't get the correct parts to fix it.
So they bypassed the EGR valve , sent me on my way.
Noticed a lack of power under any kind of load. Similar to when the cat plugged up.
Took it a shop in AZ who discovered the cat plugged up again.
Seems the previous shop just bangd a hole in the plug and didn't bother to clean out the mess.
Three years later was enough to plug it back up again.

So, a repair of a repair.

Normally when catalytic converters are plugged, they are replaced with a new converter. They cannot be cleaned.
Banging out the "plug" out is smashing a hole through the converter's honeycomb ceramic structure, destroying its ability to clean the exhaust gases.

Shops or individuals destroying the interiors of catalytic converters, or installing bypass pipes, are in violation of Federal emission laws that prohibit this practice. If it ever needs smog testing, it will need to have the converter replaced to pass.
