Securing a Smart Plug October 19, 2021, 08:24:26 pm The facility where we park our new to us 2017 LD provides 2 hours of electric per day so we can keep our batteries charged. Our old 99 LD had the shore power cord hard wired inside the driver rear compartment, so no one could take it. The Smart Plug seems to invite theft as I don't see a way to secure it. Any suggestions to keep it from wandering off?
Re: Securing a Smart Plug Reply #1 – October 19, 2021, 08:38:08 pm I think your simplest solution would be to get a trickle charger and use a traditional extension cord (that could still be stolen, but not as valuable to you or a thief). Perhaps someone else has an idea to secure the smart plug. Rich
Re: Securing a Smart Plug Reply #2 – October 19, 2021, 08:54:05 pm If you are that concerned, use it for the two hours of power, then put it away. Can’t say I worry a lot about the power cord being stolen, the Marinco cords can be easily taken too.External surge protectors are a more common target.Larry 1 Likes
Re: Securing a Smart Plug Reply #3 – October 19, 2021, 09:53:14 pm My biggest concern in a facility is the catalytic converter.
Re: Securing a Smart Plug Reply #4 – October 20, 2021, 12:19:50 am The trickle charger plus extension cord idea is a good one. But if I had to guess, I'd guess that a SmartPlug cordset would be less likely to be stolen, if anything, because it's so uncommon that a thief might not easily be able to use it or fence it.
Re: Securing a Smart Plug Reply #5 – October 20, 2021, 12:57:04 am George,As with many things, if a thief wants something badly enough, they will get it. That being the case I use a cable dog tether and a padlock to wrap in, around and through my portable surge protector. Kind of in a figure eight with the power pedestal as a post in the center of things. The padlock eventually locks the loops of the cable together to finish the security effort. I occasionally place a black bag over the whole pedestal to through a thief off the scent. Six years later I still have the surge protector. So far so good.Kent
Re: Securing a Smart Plug Reply #6 – October 20, 2021, 10:17:50 pm Thanks for all of your feedback. The power is on a timer at the storage place, so unless I go there everyday, I can't follow Larry's suggestion. When I stored the camper at my house, I had it on a timer just so I wouldn't forget to charge it everyday.Andy has a good point about the Smart Plug being hard to resell, so maybe I'll just chill a bit. I had my converter stolen (in a different storage place) last winter, so maybe I'm just too paranoid. RVing is supposed to be relaxing, right?
