Storage compartment lock
The lock on the lower forward passenger side compartment malfunctioned. Yesterday I was able to turn the key about 10 degrees and no further. I gave it a shot of graphite and Boeshield lubricant but was unable to get it unlocked. One option is to drill out the old lock and replace but there may be a simpler method. How about it?, anybody with good ideas?

Maybe the "bar" on the inside of the lock is caught or blocked by something in the compartment that has shifted, preventing the lock from being turned? You could try raising the LD on the side of the compartment that won't open and give the compartment door a couple of whacks; you can probably figure how I know this might work for you (if the lock is hung up on something in the compartment).  ;)

This happened to me with the generator door. Fortunately there was just enough room for me to reach between the generator and door from underneath to bend the lock tab just enough to release the door.

I thought I was going to have remove the lock and soak it in penetrating oil. However before I did that I stowed the door in the up position and really soaked the lock with WD40. It then finally freed up. I had sprayed the lock with the door in the locked position previously without success. Apparently it just needed a longer soaking in my case.

Hi Ian; If you can turn it with a key, further than with a screwdriver, then the 'tumblers' aren't stopping the rotation, and it must be something that fell inside the compartment to block the motion of the cam.  Make sure it is the right key CH751, and it is in all the way. Then force it to rotate.  Be prepared to break the key off, there are plenty more around. You could drive around over something bumpy (railroad tracks) to see if you can dislodge or shift whatever is blocking that cam.
I'm unclear about which compartment?  Are you talking about the compartment above the exhaust pipe, under the water heater? Or the one under the forward dinette seat?   If dinette seat, you can remove the top of that compartment. Small Phillips screws around the perimeter.
The other compartment just forward and below the compartment under the passenger side couch/pull out bed will have to have a comment from a newer midbath owner.
The cheap standard locks can be drilled to remove the brass (stamped 'tumblers'), and the insides pulled out to turn the lock with a large screwdriver  RonB

   * edited: The propane tank must have moved to the driver side farthest back, instead of just behind the passenger entry door. So that is a storage compartment now.

Hi Ian,
This happened to us years ago when *stuff* shifted in a compartment.    We got to our campground and couldn't get to needed items.  So, I sat in front of the compartment and turned the key a gillion times for about an hour and a half when it suddenly turned and the door opened.   A piece of cardboard was preventing the lock from opening.   By working the key, it finally chewed through the cardboard.   Before you drill the lock, I'd practice patience and keep working the lock.
Best of luck,

Thanks to one and all! The compartment is the lower one on the passenger side closest to the front, so unfortunately I cannot access it thru the bottom of the locker under the forward. seat of the dinette. As the locker in question has all my leveling blocks, shovel etc. it would be real tough to list that side of the rig and "shake" it back from the door of the locker.  I don't think I have a spare key so doming something that may break the key, at least until i get a spare is out of the question. So, my current plan is to call Todd, find out the details on the lock to see if I can get one locally, plus order one from Todd, go to the rig tomorrow and try to work the lock, and if i can't get it open, drill it out and replace if I have a new one, and it not, keep the door closed with a piece of black duct tape..
Our rig is grey, so it might not show excessively!.
I will let you know how it goes.

Ian,

Common issue it seems when an item falls against the locking mechanism. I had this happen a few years back when a cardboard sheet that I used for kneeling in the dirt stopped the lock.

The cardboard was tied with plastic strapping. The strap looped around the latch. Sometimes something will fall against the door itself and prevent the latch from turning. Pressing against the door at the latching area can relieve the pressure on the lock and the latch. Frustrating for sure.

A sheet of cardboard placed between the storage bay door lip and the contents will prevent items from getting stuck on the lock.

Here is a link to Amazon for replacement keys. It’s the same key number Ron mentioned. Southco CH751 Keys for RV Campers, Cabinets, Push Locks (2 Keys) Southco CH751 Keys for RV Campers, Cabinets, Push Locks (2 Keys): Amazon.com:...

Best of luck.

Well, here's the way it went!  I went up to the rig, equipped with new lock, drill, tools, etc. I got to thinking, I have a new lock, etc., so if I force the old lock and break the key, I am still OK as I can drill it out. So with my trusty pliers I slowly applied pressure and behold! The lock turned and problem solved.!
Turns out that the last time I  put our door mat away, it was facing inward with the bight towards the door and pressing against the tang of the lock!
So, thanks one and all for your suggestions, and I will exit stage left!

If your locks are CH751, and for security reasons, get Tubular Cam Lock with 5/8" Cylinder and Chrome Finish, Keyed Alike 4 Pack.... Not necessarily these as there are different sizes. Be sure to install the cam lock washer correctly.... Just a thought.
