That's progress?
The good news is the Interstate Highway System is slowly converting itself back to primitive trails, as the pavement disintegrates and the bridges fail or fall down. Soon, driving from coast to coast may be similar to conditions of 75 years ago, all those little towns could spring back to life to service the slower moving traffic, going cross country would be an adventure again.

These folks had great adventures doing so.

Big Roads by Earl Swift is an interesting read about the history of the interstate highway system.

Just completed a two week road trip from the Bay Area to Chicago and back.

Besides Nevada and Iowa, all on two lane roads, actually seeing the country.   Nebraska is such a joy on rural roads.  Interstates maybe fast, but very few of them are scenic.
