Taming the Towbar Clunk
About a year ago, I installed a towbar clamp bought on Amazon.   Of course there’s several brands of this type of clamp as well as several different restraining methods.  I purchased the type clamp in the photo based on user’s reviews.

My only guidance should you decide to install this type of clamp is to fully extend the towbar before tightening it down.  That will prevent the towbar from any movement.  I’ve not had any clunking sounds or problems in 5,000 miles of towing.

Hope this helps.

I've used the style (maybe the same brand) on our current rig.  It has worked very well towing a 5,000 lb Jeep for over 70,000 miles.  It does require a wrench to remove the tow bar from the receiver, but we've only had to do that a few times.

We also use the hitch anti rattle plate for the towbar for the Jeep.  I like it. I also use one for the bicycle carrier on the Jeep.

I did overtighten one and strip the threads on the U bolt.  It is spec'ed for 40 ft/lb.. Now I carry a torque wrench for tightening.

Before the hitch u-clamps were available, I would drill several 3/4’ holes in the receiver and then weld 1/2'’ nuts over the holes. 1/2” bolts can be inserted and tightened against the tow bar, accomplishing the same as a u-clamp.

I now use u-clamps on the new towbar and for the bike rack, same as Harold.
With the u-clamp and the bolts, the hitch will never move.

On many towbars, it’s possible to remove slop and movement by replacing worn spacers and bushings.
Minimal excess movement in the hitch, towbar and baseplate makes for a more enjoryable ride, less bucking and a toad that tracks straight.
E-trailer carries a wide range of towbar repair kits for major brands.

The new towbar and hitch arrangement has a much stronger safety cable connection.
I need to post some photos of the new setup.
