Anybody now how to work on a Fiamma awning? May 28, 2021, 07:45:55 pm Hi everyone,We're finally back to our RV ("Thistle Dew Too") and trying to get her ready for a enjoyable meander from NV back to NH via some follow-our-nose northern route. We're at my BIL's home and I'm taking a few days to get things ship shape before we hit the road.So far my biggest victory was correcting a leak with the water pump, and I decided to turn around the pump to make it easier should I need to work on it in the future. Yay, it seem to work So here is the reason for this post. I damaged my awning when an unseen dangling steel cable from a telephone pole caught the leading edge of my closed awning while I was pulling out of a parking spot. I stopped right away, but I had already damaged the right end cap of my F45Plus Fiamma awning (on a 2000 Mid-Bath). The awning still works, but there is a hole on the leading edge due to broken plastic end cap, and that lets in water and debris while driving, and bees to nest in the awning while parked. So I purchased a replacement part from Fiamma and am trying to install it, but am not sure how things are hooked up inside. I've seen their parts list, but have no instructions on disassembly or reassembly, and the parts diagram doesn't show the connectors (screws, rivets, etc). Here's a partial image of their parts list: https://www.lazydazeowners.com/index.php?action=dlattach;sa=tmpattach;attach=post_tmp_2449_06c185105fd3226d76442f9a30c5ff40;topic=0The piece I am trying to replace is 3rd in from the right # 98655-959 R (called the Right End Cap). I had access to one screw from the inside of this part and was able to remove that. But I also see what look like a couple of rivets (?) through the plastic.I've already removed the end cover #02741-01, which was held on by plastic tabs. And I've removed two metric hex screws that hold the awning crank assembly together from the top (not seen in the part # 98655-153*), but that did not actually separate the pieces -- they are still held together (though a little looser without the screws). That's as far as I've gotten. I spoke briefly with Fiamma tech support, so I'm aware there is a spring on both ends. I've put a strap on the end I'm working on, just in case. I've opened up the awning slightly (left side only moved) which seemed to reduce the spring tension on the right side. But now I feel stuck. My request for the group: Anyone have insight as to how this part of the awning is assembled? And if you have tips or guidance for how I might proceed, that would be wonderful. Finally, if you don't think this is something a DIYer should attempt to do, I welcome that reality check as well. Oh well, since Fiamma is closed up for the long weekend, I thought I'd check in with my LD folks and see if someone (Larry?, anyone?) might be able to offer some wise counsel. Thanks in advance -- looking forward to get back on the road after 18 months!Steven & Carol Crisp
Re: Anybody now how to work on a Fiamma awning? Reply #1 – May 29, 2021, 06:01:21 am Steven-In 2014 I broke the retainer pawl in the mechanism at the forward end of the roller. I just reviewed the pictures I took of the awning repair. Among them are pictures of the entire assembly removed from the coach and disassembled, so I had that end cap off. I don't remember the specifics, though. Here's my vague recollection: I opened the awning and removed the spring arms first. I then removed the case from the coach, with roller inside. I laid the case on a pair of sawhorses. In one of the pictures, I see a rivet in the end cap, so I expect I drilled out the rivets to remove the end cap.If you don't already own an inexpensive "pop" rivet tool, you will need to buy or borrow one to replace the rivets. I don't think I owned one until I repaired the awning. It's been quite useful to have since.I realize this may not be of much help.Mark H.

Re: Anybody now how to work on a Fiamma awning? Reply #4 – May 29, 2021, 03:12:25 pm Yay for this thread! We somehow bonked a hole in the top of the right end cover (not the cap). Just got the replacement and have been puzzling how it detaches and attaches. Good to know that it is just held on by plastic tabs. Thanks! — Jon
Re: Anybody now how to work on a Fiamma awning? Reply #5 – May 29, 2021, 03:41:29 pm Glad it was helpful Jon. I was puzzling over that too, and feared it was caulked in place like everything else on an LD 😬But it easy to remove with a flat head screwdriver and some gentle prying.

Good luck.Macmarty 2005 MB 26.5Thanks for the suggestion Macmarty,I did check out their website and YouTube channel, but found nothing on this sort of repair. Until I hear of a feasible repair, and because the awning still works even with the damaged end cap, I’ve gone ahead and applied some eternabond to close up the hole, while making sure not to prevent the awning from closing. I think that will work for now, but if anyone knows how to remove the old end cap, please let me know, and I’ll try that when we get back to NH. Appreciate the replies! 1 Likes
Re: Anybody now how to work on a Fiamma awning? Reply #7 – June 14, 2021, 02:35:42 pm The right cover replacement did turn out to be easy. I was concerned that the prying would snap some of the plastic on the awning body, but it didn’t. Thanks again! — Jon
Re: Anybody now how to work on a Fiamma awning? Reply #8 – June 14, 2021, 04:04:00 pm Awning replacement,We have purchased a fixer-upper (2005 31' IB). We have it in pretty good shape at this point, but the last major piece is an awning replacement. The old one was cobbled together and our RV shop could not fix it. I've ordered a new awning from LD. They're going to drop ship it from Fiamma. We're only moderately handy, but wondering if this is a DYI project, or should we get a professional install. Any suggestions? I recently replaced the toilet water valve and seat, which felt like an accomplishment!Erika
