That card stays in a safe at home. We keep a couple of other cards for day to day purchases. In this way, if we loose or otherwise are forced to replace a day-to-day credit card, we do not need to worry about re-setting our account information on our various service provider web sites. Since we adopted this approach, we’ve not had to re-set any of our auto-pay credit card information.On the road, we use a CostCo, chip/RFID card at CostCo store/gas stations. We keep a second chip credit card for use in places where Apple Pay is not accepted. Finally, we have an Amazon credit card that we use only at WholeFoods & Amazon due to the 5% rebate it affords for purchases at Amazon entities.We too use an ATM/Debit card only for cash withdrawals. We link that card to a checking account dedicated to that purpose. And we keep a modest amount of money in that associated account so that if someone were to obtain the ATM credentials they would be able to steal only that limited sum.W 2 Likes

Reply #27 – August 08, 2021, 06:49:56 pm I stumbled into Apple Pay when I was looking to buy a new computer.If you use Apple Pay, you can spread payments for one year without interest.A much easier hit on my finances than paying $2000 or more at one go.Once I started using it, I realized just how convenient it is.Now, I use it when possible. Convenience wins over just about anything.

Maybe the bank you use offers credit cards too? Mine does, so I can keep track of my credit card purchases as well as my debit card and other accounts just by logging in to my online banking (only on my computer, I've never used my phone for any banking). Another option might be a pre-paid CC from your bank for the trip? Estimate how much cash you expect to need for gas and put it on the card?Carrying a bunch of cash, going inside each time to pay all sounds like a lot of trouble to me; standing in line, estimating how much you'll need, etc., especially given the current conditions with C19! As I said, I haven't been paying attention to payment options at the pump, and I haven't been far from home, but I wonder if Apple Pay or Google Pay aren't much more common out west, particularly California than they are elsewhere? You are required to sign up to the cloud. No thanks. “I don’t do the cloud”. Not for photos. Not for anything. Especially with Apple’s latest announcement of spying on customer photo storage. This just opens up a whole can of worms. I’m good with checking my bank notifications. US Bank covers us for fraudulent Debit Card use. Works for me.Kent 1 Likes

As Andy and Jota stated, you just link your existing CC. Not sure what Apple Card requires.I just used Apple Pay for the first time at a Valero in Lost Hills. I had to go inside as no pay at the pump feature, unlike the Love’s next door which was overly crowded. I asked the cashier for $100 gas but it was over the gas limit so had to do $90 instead.

I doubt that it’s a lot less along I-5 through the valley? Basically its all binary math that is using assorted computers that you don't own. Once you connect to any server on any service you have lost control. You are trusting the assorted vendors that they are doing the programming they said they are doing. The 'problem' with Apple scanning your phone is Apple is scanning your phone. Years ago it was said if you wanted to know the truth about somebody all you had to do is look at their checkbook and appointment calendar. <smile> today I'd add web browser history. We get 4% cash back on gas worldwide, including gas at Costco and 3% cash back on restaurant and eligible travel purchases. Yesterday, I decided to suck it up and try the store in Lancaster, CA. Yes, the line was long and it was pretty tight getting to the pumps and getting back on the main road because of the layout of this particular store. I couldn’t imagine taking an RV with toad through but I did see one large class A there so . . .Anyway, at $3.99, it was the cheapest gas around (Top Tier to boot) and I’m happy to report they do accept Apple Pay. Not sure if it’s limited to $100 or not as I was in a car.
