Roof seam reseal July 09, 2020, 12:30:20 am I have a question I haven't seen before I figure someone will have a good answer. I have a box of the 8x 1 stainless screws recommended on here to screw on the corner caps if needed. I had to buy a 100 ct box and only used about 4 on my corner remove and replace corner job.Now im doing the top seams , the side pieces that are screwed on and then sealed over on the top: some of these old screws under the old sealant are showing signs of some rust worms and they wiggle. Not many but a few; my question is since I have the screws an am taking all the old sealant off and resealing with 5200 then covering with eternabonc 4" would it be a good idea to sink a few of these screws in close , say an inch away from the rough looking old screws??? I see no reason with the 5200 and eternabond and all that it would need it but I don't see what it would hurt either??Thanks for the HelpGrumpy
Re: Roof seam reseal Reply #1 – July 09, 2020, 09:28:21 am If the old screws wiggle in the holes, that sounds like rot may have weakened the wood around the screws. If you can snug up those screws, then rot is not the issue. I would remove the old screw, put a tiny bit of caulk in the hole and re-set the screw. If the screw does not tighten, then rot is probably the issue and making more holes for more screws is not the answer. So, either way, I would not be adding more holes and screws.Ken F in WY 3 Likes
Re: Roof seam reseal Reply #2 – July 11, 2020, 11:50:11 pm I would snug them, but if they are loose enough to wiggle I don’t know if they can be snuggled up. I would take out ones that can not be put in tight, then put in a slightly fatter screw so you have a good bite into the wood - putting a dab of sealant in the hole first. You can check for dry rot with an icepick to poke at an angle and see if the wood is soft.Jane 1 Likes
