RV Gutters
Hello again -

Thank you all for putting up with my flurry of questions over the past few days. I have been spending a lot of time with the DogHaus as I am going back to work on Monday and wont have time for quite a while.

Currently I have gutters over the awing and the cabover. The awning gutter appears to be in decent shape and does not need be replaced at this time. The cabover gutter is cracked and coming loose at the ends. When I try to reposition it to original position it breaks more.

I ordered new gutter to replace the cabover, and new install on the drivers side and rear. Marine Gutters | The Original RV & Marine Gutters

I found a few threads of people  discussing putting on a rear gutter but no pictures or specifics. Since the rear is sloped and continuous there isnt an easy seam to follow - Can anyone provide insight as to location of rear gutter placement (toward top of slope, bottom of slope, just above rear running lights where slope goes completely vertical etc.) Another thought is where should I "end" the gutter? Not sure if I want all the water to constantly dump onto the endcap seam? Should placement of rear gutter be angled straight from right to left / left to right or "peaked" in the middle to allow runnoff at both ends.

Deep thoughts early in the morning.

Thanks all!!! Looking forward to any and all responses. And I will post pics when the job gets done.

Jodi

I think you and I are two of a very small minority! I rarely see other LDs with any type of gutter.

I installed mine primarily to avoid black streaks down the sides of my rig, and so that is all I've done. Since the back window slopes the way it does I saw no need for a gutter in that location. YMMV!   ;)

Jodi, if you click on the banner photo and then enlarge as much as you can, you will see the EZE Gutter on the driver's side of my LD. You also can see where it stops on the rear panel. Doing it again, I probably would extend it another inch lower to avoid the horizontal seam where it stops. You will also see the EternaBond patch on the end cap which I need to reseal. As Steve said, the gutter will help prevent black streaking. It will handle light rain but not heavy rain. Also, note that I have a short piece of EZE Gutter over the rear window.

Thanks Steve and Chris,

I cant take credit for the initial install idea - it came that way when I bought it in March. But, I do see obvious benefit of decreased black streaking (especially after spending 3 days cleaning / polishing the outside).

The gutter on the passenger side of mine only goes to the end of the bedroom window. I think I like the idea of bringing it around that back curve and just past that seam like you suggested. Any hesitation with having it end right at the end cap? Like more increased of water intrusion into that seam?

I blew up and circled that area you were referring to on your rig and attached the pic here.

If the (window and end cap) seams are sealed, there should be no water intrusion, gutters or no gutters.  ;)

Jodi, it's not Larry's LD, it's mine.  :) In the 15 years or so it's been up, there hasn't been a problem. As mentioned, you could bring it down lower or you could swing it more into a perpendicular position toward the front of the LD so it is farther away from any seam. Before you attach the gutter, play around with placement to see what makes sense to you.

Jodi, there are gutter spouts or extensions that could be used at the ends of the gutters to direct runoff away from the seams. Googling that term will show you some options.

update -

We got the gutters finished yesterday. Here are some pics,

Previously installed was a gutter over the awning and cabover. The awning side gutter was still in good shape so was not replaced. The cabover gutter was very deteriorated, cracking, and coming loose at the ends. It was easy to remove. I rolled any leftover 3m adhesive off with my fingers and cleaned the area with rubbing alcohol. Replaced the new cabover gutter in exact same spot.

The drivers side gutter is butted up to the top seam. This seems to work well on the awning side and its a nice line to follow for straightness.

I wasnt sure where to put the rear gutter so kind of stretched the gutter out over the rear running lights to get a feel for it. Seemed like it worked well and was easy to follow this straight line so i went with it.

My dad took a thin string with light weights attached to either end and hung them over the running lights to give me a visual line to follow ( Good idea Dad! - wish I would have taken a pic for you all ).

Thanks for all your help and ideas!! Now I just have my fingers crossed the new 3M adhesive sticks. And I will investigate some of the gutter spout ideas.
