Does the Generator on my 2001 26.5' LD need to be dropped just to change filter?
I have an Onan Generator, Model 4BGEFA26101P, on our 2001 26.5' LD, and was curious if we have to drop the generator just to change the oil filter.  The generator sits cockeyed in the compartment door opening, so it appears (although I haven't tried it yet) that the filter will not come out without hitting the frame of the compartment opening.  Can anyone confirm this for me, or offer your insight?  I'd hate to have to loosen a bunch of Pan Bolts, disconnect electrical wires/plugs, as well as the fuel line - all just to change the filter.  Thank you for your kind help.

All normal maintenance can be done without removing the generator, including changing the filter.
Onan Emeralds have very flexible rubber mounts.
It's been while since I changed one but I remember having to lift the generator a bit, using a rolling floor jack,
to provide the clearance to remove and replace the filter

The oil and air filters, and spark plugs, could all be changed on my previous 2000 MB without disturbing the generator at all. Tight; but doable.
It’s been years, but I recall getting a small oil filter wrench to get the filter loose.

Hopefully your ‘01 is similar.

Ed, Larry - Thank you!   I'll have someone with nimbler hands than mine give it a shot.

While you're at it, if its been a while, might as well change the air filter. They aren't very expensive.

Hi WManthey; (an actual name would be great). The housing around the filter is beveled away just below the filter on my Onan, so it exposes enough to get a strap wrench onto the filter. The small one available from Harbor Freight looks about like the wrench I used.About $5. The filter isn't all that tight, and you just need to get it started. There should also be a 'cap' wrench available that fits onto the end of the filter. It was messy to remove it, although a lot of the oil drained out. On my 1999 TK, the edge of my compartment wasn't that close to the filter. I had more of a problem getting the drain plug valve to operate. I enlarged a hole in the generator bottom plate and installed a better valve.   RonB

Hello,

I have a 98 30' RB.  I'm due for a 150 hour oil change, plugs, etc. on my Onan generator.

I don't see anything in the LD manual or Onan generator about how to "drop" my generator to accomplish the task of properly maintaining my generator.  This looks like a major pain.

Do I have to call an Onan tech for this?

I address this topic only five messages above, in this thread.
No need to drop the Emerald generator, the generator needs to be jacked up and lifted a bit to clear the filter for removal. The mounts are very flexible.
Except for major engine work, the generator is never removed.

I think he was asking about spark plug removal.

Access to the rear spark plug is very tight but can be removed with dropping the generator, removal of the carburetor may be necessary to get to it. Below is the best video I could find.

Dropping the generator isn't exceptionally difficult but does require a rolling jack with a wide base and, preferably two people..
I use a transmission jack when removing them. Disconnect the fuel line and battery before starting, The wires and battery cables should be long enough to allow dropping without removing them.
