Just a quick note to clarify a couple of things I touched on in my previous post.  First, it should be made clear that a General class license includes all the privileges of the Technician class as well as HF privileges.  Also, I mentioned the RV service net.  This net is similar to the one mentioned in an earlier post oriented to offshore sailors.  Hams check in and are available to make phone calls, etc., for almost any purpose except commercial, which is not allowed by the FCC.  Also, hams are usually on these HF frequencies any time of day or night, and are usually more than happy to help another ham.

For those of us who aren't Hams (yet), the Garmin units such as the Garmin GPSMAP66i, the newer version of the Explorer plus, will show your location, topographic maps, send tracking location to selected recipients, can send out an SOS, and can send and receive text messages.  I have used an earlier and less expensive unit to communicate with my wife when offshore and out of range for VHF or cell.  Hitting San Diego from 185 miles offshore was no problem.  My daughter uses the above unit to communicate with her mom when she is on long through hikes.

It does require a $60 activation fee and a $20/month subscription.  There is no free lunch.

For Off Grid Living, this young couple are making their small mark to stay green. They are staying isolated and they have a chain saw.
