Price help 1992 26 foot January 30, 2020, 12:35:45 am My wife were looking at rv’s and tripped over a used 1992 26’ Lazy Daze in great condition. It’s got a little over 50k on it, 1200 on the generator and except for a couple of lights everything seems to be in great shape. No real signs of wear inside at all. Motor runs great brakes, all of it seems great. There are a couple of spots of rust one on the bumper and one near the water fill. By small I mean size of a quarter.So I have no foundation for price. They seem to be above typical rv’s. I’m in California and his ask is 13,500. Probably make a decision in the next day or so. Is this out of line? If no, counter ideas?Thanks

The 1992 26.5' models were built ton the lightweight E350 chassis with a minimal GVW of 11,500-lb, it is very easy to overload these rigs, there is so little CCC, it's not enough cargo capacity for most, so beware. IMO, unless it is a 23.5' model, any LD 26' or longer should be on a E450 with a GVW of 14,050-lbs or more.Buying a 28 year old RV is a gamble and unless you love to work on things and are a good mechanic, I would save up for something newer. We have seen some horror stories here with folks purchasing "nice looking" older LDs only to find they need thousands of dollar of repairs, more than what the rig is worth. Hidden rot is very hard to find even for the experts and older LDs are very prone to rot unless the roof and windows seals have be properly maintained, most older rigs are not. If you can locate a professional RV inspector, it's worth every penny to get an idea of what you are buying and an estimated cost of what it will take to get it fully operational and dependable. We have a handle on ownership trail and all manuals service records etc. Feeling pretty good about the condition right now, I've crawled around and inside it with my light. I'm certainly no inspector but so far so good. I don't have access to the manual right now, perhaps you could help educate me on the carrying capacity. We won't be pulling a trailer, and 90% of the time it will be my wife, dog, and I doing weekends within a couple of hours. We are not the kind of folks that bring everything. Maybe a bike or two or a kayak or two. Enough food and drink for the weekend. Should we be concerned? 1 Likes

Even so, I ended up with a '97 in "good shape" and still put in a fair amount of money on engine maintenance, new tires, etc., lucky for me, the seller covered the $1400 in generator repairs! Keeping in mind that new tires alone will add $2k to your $13.5, I'd ask myself if I'd be willing to pay $2 -$4k additional over the next year or so above the initial outlay.Good luck!!!

You will find that real world, 'down the road' weights of RVs, regardless of type or brand or chassis, can be very difficult to suss out! The GVWR may be listed in the specs, but the actual CCC usually remains a mystery; plenty of RVs are overweight before adding a can of beans!You might want to familiarize yourself with RV weight terminology; one source is:RV and Vehicle Weight Definitions | Your RV LifestyleA low CCC can be doable, but one has to be very careful not to overload the rig and exceed the maximum GVWR; a heavy rig is subject to lot more stress on tires, brakes, suspension, and every other component, in addition to being more difficult to control and stop in an emergency maneuver than one which maintains a 'cushion' under the GVWR. As always, YMMV.

I travel solo, and pretty 'light', and even my 23.5' TK, currently at 11800 'down the road' pounds, would have exceeded the GVWR of earlier models.

Disclosure- I am at the computer listing ours as I read this. The ad will be up today.Regarding weight- I am a stickler for GVWR and knowing what my rig weighs, as a result of a serious incident on a work truck back in the 70's. So when we leave on a trip, we drive thru the Washington State weigh station on our corner, which is almost always accessible, and free to use. I track weights on my vehicle log spreadsheet. I can only report what we have observed, so more disclaimer about your mileage varying. WADOT scale- Dry weight- no cargo, one driver, no LP, no water, a quarter tank of gas- 9,238#WADOT scale WADOT scale Double checked this with a full tank of fuel, no water, one driver, a few items stowed- 10,280#, so we have a baseline.WADOT scale- Packed for a month trip, one driver, ⅓ tank water, full fuel, full LP- 11,140#Weighed at Henderson Line up, full gas, driver and passenger, ⅔ water, ½ LP, after one month on the road-11,650#At WADOT scale, full gas & LP, travel equipment & tools, no water, no passenger, no food, clothes- 10,720#WADOT scale loaded for 6 months, full fuel & LP, one passenger, ⅓ water- 11,560#We don't tow, and we are light packers. I empty sewage tanks whenever possible before travel, and the ⅓ water tank (16-20 gal) has always been enough. While I don't pack the tools Larry does, I carry a full set, plus the usual RV camp set up, spares, cords, hoses, etc.Just my experience, take it for what its worth, $0.02! At Quartzite, I fill the tank in town before driving 2 mi +/- to park it. I dump the 'extra' water before leaving. That is one strategy you could use and pare a few hundred pounds.joel 1 Likes

There is an assumption that buyers of this level know what they are doing. The 'mumbers' are available but the assumption is you are a commercial buyer know and understand what you are doing. The problem is RV makers are under no obligation to explain any of this to the buyers. It truly is a buyer beware situation. Glen 1 Likes
