I'll be working on a couple of "lists"...

Things to go/see/do in the Albuquerque area (thanks, Lorna)

Places to stay on the way to/from the Fiesta - RV Parks, campgrounds, casinos

AND... things we could certainly use at the LD group site.   Tables, pop-ups, etc., etc.  This will be published by June as a please bring along if you have it.  Just like Morro Bay.

As always, BYOC  (bring your own chairs) and I'll be bringing the "pre-mix"!!!

"Places to stay..."

During the eight consecutive years that I traveled from the Bay Area to ABQ there were two places that I never failed to stop at, Meteor Crater (AZ) and USA RV Park in Gallup (NM).

Closer to ABQ there is the Rt. #66 Casino but you park in the parking lot, no RV park there.

We'd also recommend USA RV Park in Gallup.

As of three years ago, the Route 66 Casino had a nice RV Park, and I believe overnighting in the Casino lot is no longer ok.

Art's correct; casino lot RV parking at Route 66 Casino was eliminated when the RV park opened in 2016.

See that? Tells you how long it's been since I was over that route. Old news is not necessarily good news!   ::)

But I can tell you this... the body's of my kinfolk are still in the ABQ cemetery where I last seen them.

So, it's a fur piece to Oct 2020 but so much the better. That years lapse will give all of the potential attendees a chance to begin a list of Go-see-do while in the New Mexico/Arizona region.

I could probably fill this page with ideas but will limit it to just an interesting few.

#1. South of ABQ there is a town of interest... San Antonio (NM). There you can sample a Green Chili Cheeseburger at the Buckhorn. While in town learn about the beginnings of the Hilton Hotel empire. Go take a gander at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife refuge (hope the birds are home).

#2. Slightly SE from there you will find Trinity Site, where the 1st Atomic Bomb was detonated.

#3. About 50 miles west of Socorro you will find the Very Large Array (VLA) Radio Telescope. A bit north of there you'll run across Pie Town. It's worth the detour.

#4. Charting a route to your North West you can reach Zuni (it lies abt. 30 miles south of Gallup). In the Zuni Pueblo there is an old church. If you are lucky and can find the man who has the key to the church you will be amazed, as was I, when you see the murals painted on the church walls. While in Zuni take a look at the Turquoise/Silver Jewelry at the artisan co-op. If you think the Navahos are great silver smiths you have never seen what the Zuni can do!

#5. And last of all, put your GPS to work and find Ganado, AZ. There you will find what the 'Old West' was really like, at the Hubbell Trading Post. Under the auspices of the Nat. Park Service this is living history at it's finest. And just in case you recognize the name Hubbell, just think telescope!

BEEN THERE - DONE THAT!   :o    ;D    8)

It may have re-opened by now, but

While the "Owl" is just okay, the Buckhorn was the real McCoy!   ::)

We stayed in The Birdwatcher's RV Park there for six weeks in 2004, but never managed to get to either restaurant - more's the pity.  The manager of the park, Jackie, said that The Owl restaurant was the authentic one.  I'm wondering what the difference was between the two offerings.

May need to go to a personal taste test!

"May need to go to a personal taste test!"

May I come along?

There are a number of factors that come into play when evaluating a restaurant! First and foremost is the presentation and taste of the food in question. Secondly you have to consider the 'Ambiance'.

The Buckhorn excelled on both counts.  ;)

I could identify a number of restaurants in Santa Fe, some very good and others not. But one stands out for me in Taos. Just across the main drag from the cemetery where Kit Carson and family are buried is Michael's Kitchen. Many people walking by on the street would pass it unnoticed. For me it is the epitome of south western cuisine. When the breakfast burrito hangs over the edges of a large plate you've got my instant attention.  ;D  Plus they have an excellent bakery!  :P

Both are genuine New Mexico fare and are on the New Mexico chili cheese burger trail map.

Eating burgers on New Mexico's green chile cheeseburger trail - Los Angeles...

On a winter trip to Bosque Del Apache, we ate at the Owl twice. Didn't get to try the Buckhorn, it was closed for the holidays Sounds like a good reason for a return trip.
And yes, the burgers were great.

ONE spot remains from our original 25 !!  Thanks to everyone for agreeing with Lisa and I that this was a very good idea! Looking forward to connecting with everyone, watching those fabulous balloons and having a green chili burger or two!!

Now that the dust has settled some with the reservations, I will be working on the early arrival situation...so far I have Joel and Dan/Lynn who want to come early...anyone else?

That's all for now...

I highly recommend coming early so as to be there the day before ballooning is to start. Some years the weather changes during the week and one or more days are cancelled due to unsuitable flying conditions. One year the last three days were cancelled and those that arrived midweek were shut out. There is plenty to see and do, both balloon-wise and in the Albuquerque area, so arriving early is a good thing, not a burden. — Jon

Welcome to LDOG, Don and Tery. We are happy you've enjoyed the group over the last years. Our first gathering with LD owners was the  Balloon Fiesta back in '06 I believe. Lots of fun.

Hey there... just got off the phone from the Fiesta folks...HERES THE SCOOP.... get your confirmation number and your credit card handy and phone Erica at 505 821 1000 she will help you add in early days.

The confirmed method for us to park together is for us to arrive together. We will work ALL that out later, but for now, if you arrive early you will be parked as you arrive and that will be your space for the duration.

I've had to let go of having our "space" arriving as we do, la-ti-dah.... It is rally style parking. They will place us as best they can in a group...depending on who vacates before us!

So the ever positive person I am... at least we will ALL BE THERE TOGETHER, if not actually neighbors...
