Our first border crossing and a new Lazy Daze youtube vid!
Hey guys, we have been absolutely loving our Lazy Daze and we recently took her up from South Carolina to Niagara Falls for a long weekend.  We made a youtube video about the trip if you are interested.

We didnt have any issues with the border crossing but we were wondering if any of you guys ever had?

Thanks!

Border crossings are different every time. This summer, we went into B.C. and crossed both ways with a minimal of time and hassle.
On a previous trip, we were told to leave the the LD and sit in a waiting room while the rig was inspected.
We have had wine and meat confiscated, after being asked what we were carrying, other times, no questions about food or alcohol.
The only questions we hear every time is where were we born and if we are carrying firearms.

Interesting, did you tell them you had wine on board and then they went and took it?  I told them we had a bottle but that was it, they were very serious about pepper spray for some reason with us....

Of all my border crossings most were without incident, but one stands out above the others.

We were entering Canada on our way to Alaska. When we stopped at the gate we were instructed to move the rig and stop in a wide spot a short distance away, exit the vehicle and wait for inspectors.

Presently (but not quickly) two agents arrived. We were again told to stand where we were and not approach the vehicle. They went inside and shortly the distaff member poked her head out and asked if someone was diabetic. I allowed that my wife was (apparently they had discovered our supply of syringes).

After some 15 minutes they came out and said we could leave, turned on there heels and walked away without further comment. It's a wonder that I wasn't grilled further since there was a copy of Guns & Ammo in plain sight on the bed.  :o

If you cross with small children, make sure you have their birth certificates. We got tangled up for a while because our son only had theirs on his phone. Not good enough.

oh yea that makes sense.  I recently flew domestically with my 12 year old nephew and I was really surprised that you really dont need anything to fly in the US, I could see internationally being different though. A passport is probably best I guess right?

Like RV border crossings, your experience traveling across borders with children will vary based on the country, your nationality, the particular agent, and probably the phase of the moon.

Child trafficking and/or crossing borders to escape court orders involving joint custody is a bigger concern these days, and we are almost always asked for the original birth certificates despite having US passports.  It is common for agents to determine if BOTH parents listed on the birth certificate are traveling with the children.  If not, you might be asked for a notarized letter from the missing parent/parents giving permission for travel.  For children with a deceased parent(s), a death certificate can be requested.

For example, Canada: What Documents Does a Minor Traveling Alone Require to Leave Canada &...

We crossed 4 or 5 borders this summer with our kids and saw variations of all of these with our kids or others we met along the way.

It's a different world these days....

Hey John,

My wife and I are big fans of your videos and you are part of the reason that we are now on the infamous "Todd waiting list".

Keep them coming!  So rare to see a great video featuring a Lazy Daze.

Hey John,

Going with the 27 mid bath. Would prefer to go with the 24 but can’t see how the bathroom sink would work for the Mrs.

I really do like your rear kitchen!

Be aware that starting on Oct. 1. 2020, you will need to show a Real ID, or equivalent, to fly even domestically.  A Passport or Military ID meets the equivalency requirement:

Oh yea I keep forgetting about that! I don’t think that will impact kids tho, I think that’s still the Wild West domestically right?

John and DW, thank you so much for sharing. Well done! I also have a RK and they seem to be more rare. I am going to check out your other videos but was wondering about the weight of your wife's bike and what kind of bike carrier you are using. Sharon

Anytime Sharon! Thats so awesome you have a RK too, we love ours! We both have rad power bikes and they weigh about 50lbs each without the batteries.  We use a Saris bike rack (and have had it for about 2 years now and ~20k miles).  I put a link to all of our ebike accessories on our website Gear – Van Board Bike

Really enjoy your videos John. I'm 39 and our family just picked up a 2008 rear bath with 20,000 miles on it. We're planning on doing that same Canada trip soon and I really appreciated your advice in the video! Did you say that bike path around Niagara is 87 miles? I'd like to see if I could conquer it on my bike! I riding RAGBRAI next year (450 miles across Iowa) so I need some serious mileage to train! More Lazy Daze videos would be great!
