The older roof racks offer handholds and a psychological sense of safety, in actual use they have limited utility. I can't remember ever seeing anyone carry gear on the roof, secured to the rack.When working on the roof, the rack does prevent accidentally backing off the sloping rear.I came close to falling off once while laying Eternabond tape along a roof seam. It's safer to finish taping the rear of the seam using a ladder.Larry

I'm not sure if the 'tie down' railings returned after that, or if they were optional, and faded away. RonB
