Charging batteries after converter failed
Hello again

The converter has stopped working, but while I'm waiting for a replacement, the solar isn't keeping the batteries charged enough to keep the furnace working. Other that running the generator (that was next on the list to get fixed) or the engine, is there a way to keep the batteries charged? Can I use a regular battery charger to charge the two house batteries, and if so how?

Many thanks...

The simple answer is yes. As most LD owners have 2 6 volt batteries following the outlined charging instructions in the LD manual should help.

Here is a pic of the instructions from our ‘15 RB LD manual.

Note that the manual instructs you to connect to the positive battery terminal first then the negative terminal. The negative terminal in reference is that of the second battery when the two LD 6 volt batteries have not been removed from their installed position in the battery compartment.

Additionally here are the pages related to the LD battery maintenance from our manual.

Hope this helps.

Note that without a functioning converter, running the generator will NOT charge the batteries. If you hook up an external battery charger, make certain it will not exceed 14.6V. A higher voltage could risk damaging 12V equipment.

Good point Steve.  A lot of the fast quick chargers start out at a higher voltage before settling down.  Of course if you were to remove the connections to your batteries, the higher voltages could be used but removing the batteries from their installed positions is just not worth it.  Most chargers have a lower voltage option.

Kent, can you send me a picture of diagram #5 so I can see how the batteries are placed with the wires.
Thanks
