Yes or No?
Okay, at the risk of getting banned from LDO (or at least admonished from the Moderators), I found this too interesting not to share.

This photo was reportedly taken (not by me) at a restroom in Grand Teton NP.  I cannot, for the life of me, figure out exactly what it means. Might make an interesting photo caption contest though!

In many foreign countries there are squat type toilets.
That sign is supposed to let them know it's not that type here in America.

Okay, I get it now. First time I've ever seen a sign like that. Thanks, Jota!

I think they don't want you to put your feet on the seat because others may wish to . . . well, you know, put another part of their anatomy on that same spot.  ;->

But the squatty potty analogy is also probably correct.  There are a lot of foreign visitors to our attractions.

As having traveled to foreign countries on business, there are some places where the toilets are holes in the floor so this stance is used....still remember my first trip to visit a Chinese factory deep in the country....walked in to the "bathroom" and it just had a hole in the floor......

Yes, now that you mention it, I remember the “squat” toilets from my Navy days overseas.

When I was in Viet Nam in the 60s with an advisory team way south near the S China Sea, the Vietnamese ladies who cleaned our hootches and wash/shower rooms would relieve themselves (in our washroom stalls) in the fashion shown on the sign. Their usual custom was to squat by the side of the road, surrounding themselves with a large basket for privacy. I suspect the park sign was directed at the large Asian traveling population visiting our national parks in recent years, although I can't imagine this habit prevailing in a most likely educated and moneyed group.

Please forgive me for contributing to this way off topic subject. The devil drove me to contribute my historical perspective.

Chris, my wife and son just got back from a trip to Vietnam. While their tour Included very nice accommodations, just from talking with her, I believe things haven’t changed too much in the poorer classes.

Traveling down memory lane...

While stationed on Guam during the '60s I had several opportunities to fly to Japan.

On one such occasion, while there to attend a training class, I was sitting on the throne one Sunday morning, reading the daily news paper, The Stars & Stripes. Suddenly the door flew open and the cleaning lady elbowed me aside and summarily changed out the toilet paper roll, unnecessarily.

The second time my whole family flew to Japan on a R&R visit. At the Tokyo Zoo my then 3 year old daughter, LazyBones2, absolutely refused to squat over the slit in the floor.   :o   ;D  Not funny!

While in Yellowstone this July 4 my friend and I came across a squat only bathroom at the Mud Volcano area. Being there was a line of foreigners we used normal (to us) bathroom. 🚽 As it is I squat over the pit toilets anyway. 😊

Having lived in Jackson Hole until just recently, I can shed some light on the subject...  It seems that some visitors (presumably Asian for the reasons mentioned above), were squatting on the outhouse toilet seats in Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks and breaking them!  The signs were installed beginning a few years ago and there seem to be fewer broken toilet seats.

I had a girlfriend once who had a roommate from India.   She frequently complained of 'footprints on the seat'.  First thing that came to mind seeing the sign.   ;)

No need to travel to Asia, I have seen them in the south of France and in Istanbul, supposedly modern countries.

I know of a few people in the U.S. who will use the squat method (shoes on the toilet) - ok, I might know more as I just don't have that conversation often with people ;D .  It is an attempt to not sit on a toilet seat that might have germs and either they don't trust or don't have access to toilet seat covers.  But yes, the next person then has to sit on whatever germs their shoes picked up and put on the toilet seat (or make sure they have a seat cover, even using TP for this in a pinch).

Let me add one more down the rabbit hole comment ......  the toilet seat is more germ free then the door  handles and air blower in the restrooms.    That forced air air blower is the worst thing to happen to restrooms.   It blows germs all over the place.

I was riding my motorcycle thru Morocco and after a night in Fez got sick.
Unfortunately, I had to travel as I had plans that couldn't be changed.
Morocco is a country that utilizes squat toilets in many places.
I spent 4 days riding thru the country having to use them with the runs. Imodium did nothing.
Finally made it to Marrakesh, tired and dehydrated, checked into a western hotel with a nice real toilet.
The concierge gave me directions to a local pharmacy who prepared something using a mortal and pestle.
It was nasty going down but worked very quickly.

Ok, derailing this topic - Jota, we found (via internet search a tried and true cure for us).  Large amounts of probiotics cures both throwing up and loose stools.  Often in one dose, sometimes a second dose is needed after another occurrence of the situation.
Large amounts means 20-30 probiotic pills, the ones that say 5 million on them.
First time I took them I was throwing up every couple hours - putting a handful of pills into  my stomach was the last thing I wanted to do but I was willing to try anything - Voila it worked first dose.

Good bacteria overpower the bad bacteria.  Issue resolved in a safe effective manner.

In the years since we have used this a few times and each time it works (rarely a second dose is needed).

PS We found this on a natural Drs web site - Mercola, I had heard of him but didn't really know of him prior to trying this.

Some years ago The Captain and I took a photographic safari to Kenya.  It was a high-end tour operator, but there were still moments of incredibly basic accommodations, especially involving toilets.  One time while traveling from one lodge to another,  I needed to off-load my morning coffee, so the van driver pulled over to a bush, backed into the bush a couple of times and let me out to hide behind the bush...when I asked him why he backed into the bush, his reply was "to get rid of snakes."  I almost gave up coffee.

Then, the same day, we had a watering stop at a native hotel out in the back of beyond.  Toilet accommodations were unisex, in a tin shed with a concrete pit which one straddled.  Now...wearing pants that needed to be lowered and still hanging onto my purse (which I did not dare put down on any nearby surface) which contained passports and $$$, I did my thing while a travel mate stood guard (I returned the favor) and the chickens next to the tin shed were being slaughtered.  They did not go quietly, but I did.

I tell 'ya, traveling and living the life in a Lazy Daze has been more than a few steps up!!

Touring Egypt a year or so after that with the same high-end tour operator, I encountered ladies' rooms over which men stood guard...inside the ladies' rooms.  With the doors to the rooms (but not the stalls) were wide open.

And in Egypt the lights will go off without notice and to our eyes, capriciously.  Very fun in a dark ladies' room where you have no idea which way is out, up or down.  And no one is yelling in English.

But the most dangerous time was when I, totally ignorant of the situation, was taking photos of the airport...and all airports are shared military bases.  I could have been an international incident...

Obviously traveling in a Lazy Daze is much safer.

A couple of years ago my DW was awarded with a free trip to Italy as part of her employers employee rewards program. While she didn’t speak of the “facilities” available, she did tell me about the time she was taking vacation pics.

Apparently there was an “incident” involving the local constabulary while she took random photos of the area totally unaware of the police activity. That was until they approached her demanding in Italian (which she does not speak or understand) that she hand over her camera. Fortunately, her tour guide intervened and defused the situation. Phew! International incident avoided.

There are many traveler tips to be gleaned on YouTube. Apparently it is a good idea to be well versed in the local customs of our vacation destinations.

It’s a wide and varied world we live in. Fascinating and often bewildering.
