Bathroom tap
Hi all

This is my first post!

I am a new LD owner (1980 20ft) and while I absolutely love her I am finding everything has a learning curve I'm not prepared for!

Last night's fun came when I had to fill my water tank for the first time. I connected the city water connection, which blew my bathroom hot water tap clear off. I CANNOT figure out how to get it back on so it either runs or shoots water now.  Ugh!

I have the tap and a small cone shaped spring. No matter what I do it just spins, it won't stay in the off position.

I'd be happy to just turn the water off to the bathroom sink, but I also cannot figure that out.

Please oh please help. I live in her full time now that it's warm in Canada and I'd really like to do my dishes!

Ali, welcome to the Lazy Daze Owners' Group. I expect someone more familiar with older LDs will chime in with some help for you.

Welcome Ali.  This is just a shot in the dark.  My guess without seeing a picture of the faucet is yours has 2 knobs with a somewhat clear cap on the top of each knob. If so, pry off that cap and you might see a a screw.  Place the knob back on the faucet and tighten that Phillips head screw.  It needs to be snug.  Then simply snap that cap back into place.

If your plumbing is like ours, there is not an under the sink shutoff valve.

You might not know that you should used a pressure regulator with city water.  It’s unwise to simply correct a hose from the city water faucet directly to your water connection.  The city water pressure can exceed the pressure limit in the water lines which can damage the plumbing.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum.

Not sure exactly how the faucet is constructed but if it is the two handle variety, see how the cold water side is assembled, the hot will use the same method, except the thread will be in an opposite direction.

Unlike a stick home, RVs normally do not have shut-off valves at each faucet. Until the faucet is fixed or capped, you will be forced to use water from a jug.

Your 39 year-old LD is plumbed with an obsolete tubing that weakens with age, with breakage of the tube fittings common.
To lessen the possibility of a plumbing disaster, never hook up to the city water inlet valve. Instead, fill the water tank and use the LD's water pump to provide pressure at a lower, consistent level. City and campground water supplies often have very high water pressure surges that can break the tubing and fittings.
Water pressure regulators are subject to failure, it's best to never take the chance and only use the onboard water tank and pump.

Ali, the water tank does not fill from the city water connection - there is another fill port behind a small door. Second, post a picture of your bathroom fixture showing the problem - your description is vague.

Thank you!

Here are some pictures. I looked for any other pieces, but nothing.

I'm hesitant to force the cold tap off as I don't need two issues.

No shut off valve, nope.

That is definitely an aftermarket faucet set. I have no idea how to fix it based on the limited information and suggest that an inexpensive replacement be considered. The Factory bathroom faucet cost less the $20.

This is what is should look like under the sink. Being so old, it could be different. Most 1980 LDs went to the wrecking yard a long time ago.

Ali, how about posting some photos of you 'LD - inside and out.

The plate with the H on it should pop off the handle. Inside will be a screw. When you take that loose the handle should come off and you can see what you have.

Thanks :)

The H does not pop off. But buying an aftermarket unit sounds like a great idea!

She's in great shape, no leaks and 100,000 miles on the engine.

I may have torn all the vents off it yesterday trusting someone else to guide me thru something I should have been smart enough to avoid. Making work for myself over here!

The top part with the 'H' should pry off, revealing a screw underneath, which will remove the knob. My guess is that the valve mechanism has just come unscrewed, and can be reset in the valve body.

Missali, look underneath the sink.  If you see water lines with hex nut connections like Larry shows in his photo, I suggest you consider buying and installing a new faucet.  Those connections are pretty standard.  Trying to fix that old one with no obvious threading to put it back together may be a real challenge, and replacing the entire faucet might be the fastest and least expensive option.

"I may have torn all the vents off it yesterday trusting someone else..."

Take at least a 12' tape measure and measure from the highest point on your roof down to the ground surface. Likely it will be somewhere between 10 and 11 feet. Put that measurement on a sticky note and paste it to the back of your sun visor. That will help every time you approach an overhead object. If in doubt, GOAL (Get Out and Look!)   ;D

Ali,

As suggested earlier, most of us use the fresh water tank that stores our on board water supply. The LD fresh water pump will gently deliver water to your faucets.

That being said, if you have not filled the fresh water tank and or flushed it, it is advisable that the tank be filled and sanitized (pretty straight forward as long as you can locate the tanks valve to release the water from the tank) before you use the water stored in it.

Sanitizing is simple. Testing the the tanks contents for sanitation is easily accomplished with inexpensive kits available on Amazon.

Good on you for already replacing the broken faucet. We’d all love to see your LD. We are all about sharing here. Welcome to the family.
